From The Top April 12, 2010
The grand opening of the Fort Benning Family Entertainment Center is 4 p.m., Friday. This facility is an excellent example of how we are continuing to improve the quality of life for Fort Benning families.
More than half of our Army Soldiers are married, and nearly half of them have children. Soldiers consistently rate child care and family services as the top two issues that impact their decision to re-enlist.
We've taken their concerns to heart. The creation of this Family Entertainment Center is the result of Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation surveys in which you told us you'd very much like to have this kind of facility on post.
Enjoy it, and know that we will continue to honor our Army Family Covenant, and we will continue to seek new ways to offer you the quality of life our Army families deserve.

| BRAC by the Numbers
Today's number is 4, times 2.
Two major roads on post are being widened from two to four lanes to prepare for the anticipated increase in traffic due to the growth associated with the move of the Armor School from Fort Knox, Ky., to Fort Benning.
Construction on Eighth Division Road in Harmony Church is expected to be completed by the end of May. The four-lane road, including the bridge that crosses U.S. Highway 27/280, will provide access from the Armor School trainee barracks on the west side to training facilities and ranges on the east side. The project was started in May.
The Dixie Road widening project is expected to start in September and will take considerably longer than construction on Eighth Division Road. Most of the two-mile stretch from the Interstate 185 interchange to Lawson Army Airfield will be widened in increments. The project currently includes a bike trail starting near Soldiers' Plaza and extending to the end of Main Post, near the airfield. It may be extended to the I-185 interchange.
The Dixie Road project is expected to be complete by March 2012.

Photo Credit: Dale Warner. | Ever stick your hand out of the car window as you're barreling down the highway? That's the feeling you get over your whole body when you jump out of an airplane, said SSG Kyle Seamans, event coordinator and assistant team leader for the Silver Wings.
"It's a blast," said Seamans, who joined the team a year ago while serving as a black hat. "Whenever you look at the ground from that height, it looks like a TV. It's just kind of surreal."

Pete Jones, the commander of the 3rd HBCT. "We are near the mid-point of this deployment and our marriage retreats were designed to introduce techniques that maintain and build relationships."

Books for the Doughboys
Photo Credit: USAMHI. | National Library Week is not the only connection the Army has with the American Library Association (ALA). That relationship first started in 1917. After the United States declared war on Germany on April 6 ,1917, an ALA representative met with Secretary of War Newton D. Baker. As one participant noted, Secretary Baker kept "a room full of senators and diplomats and other dignitaries waiting" while he developed plans to provide adequate library facilities for the Doughboys.
Shortly thereafter, the ALA established a Committee on Mobilization and War Service Plans to examine ways of ensuring that Army personnel would have quick and easy access to books, newspapers, and magazines. Within three months of declaring war, the U.S. Commission on Training Camp Activities invited the ALA to assume responsibility "for providing adequate library facilities" for thirty-two of the Army's cantonments.

Who is Carson McCullers? If you've never heard the name before, you're not alone. Although not a household name like Tennessee Williams and William Faulkner, Carson McCullers is considered one of the major writers of 20th-century Southern fiction. And she's a big deal in Columbus. Along with Ma Rainey, Coca-Cola, steamboats and textile mills, she's one of the city's claims to fame.

Families gear up for new fishing season
Children ages 15 and younger can participate in the first Family Fishing Night of the season, from 5 to 7 p.m. April 20 at Russ Pond, hosted by Outdoor Recreation.
The event, open to military ID cardholders and families, is free.
This is one of seven Family Fishing nights scheduled between April and October.
Parents aren't allowed to fish, but they can help their children. The child with the fish that weighs the most at the end of the event will win a prize.
More than 20 fishing poles will be available to children but they must be reserved in advance. Bait, including worms, will be provided. Although preregistration isn't required, Beadle recommends it so the bait doesn't run out.
Registration continues until April 19. For more information or to register, call Beadle at 706-545-9636 or Outdoor Recreation at 706-545-7978.

'Warrior First Family' to brief Benning Families interested in a Korea tour' CAMP RED CLOUD, South Korea - The commander of the Korea-based 2nd Infantry Division and his wife will address Fort Benning Soldiers and Families with Korean assignments in their future during an appearance slated for 10:15-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 28 in Pratt Hall (Room 328), located in Ridgway Hall (Bldg. 35) on post. Maj. Gen. Michael S. Tucker, who took command of the "Warrior Division" last October, and "Warrior First Lady" Teresa Tucker will discuss Family and cultural as well as training and professional development opportunities during their presentation.
The Tuckers will speak directly to Fort Benning personnel with assignment instructions or permanent change of station orders for Korea and their Families. But they also invite anyone considering serving in Korea or interested in future assignment opportunities there to attend the briefing. Participants will receive welcome packets filled with helpful brochures, pamphlets, and administrative and reference materials.
"The CG and Mrs. Tucker are very passionate about communicating the opportunities available within our division," said Lt. Col. Russell D. Goemaere, the 2nd ID spokesman. "They strongly believe in what we have to offer - the chance to conduct full spectrum training; greater stability and predictability in personal and Family life; and opportunities to explore a very unique and beautiful country."
"They want to discuss and address the concerns of Soldiers and Families who have some trepidation about coming to Korea," Goemaere added. "They also want to encourage Soldiers on assignment to Korea to bring their Families when they PCS. This should be a terrific opportunity for anyone at Fort Benning considering taking advantage of assignment opportunities in Korea - now or in the future. "
