BRAC BY THE NUMBERS

MCOE logoToday's number is 75 million.

The National Armor and Cavalry Heritage Foundation launched a campaign to build a $75 million Armor and Cav museum on Fort Benning. The museum will be located south of the new National Infantry Museum and opposite the parade field.

MG(R) George Harmeyer made a public announcement this week, revealing plans to raise $43 million to supplement the $33 million in Base Realignment and Closure funding allocated for the construction of an Army-standard climate-controlled facility.

The Armor and Cav museum will house a collection being relocated from the Patton Museum at Fort Knox, Ky. The first convoy of trucks carrying museum pieces, mostly light tanks, arrived this week, and several more are scheduled in the coming month. They will be stored on post until the museum is completed in about five years.

Fallen brother's legacy continues
It was a bittersweet moment Friday when SPC Aaron Perkins received his Airborne wings. Standing beside his classmates with A Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Perkins completed a goal he set years before - to follow in the footsteps of his paratrooper brother, SGT Andrew Perkins, and live the legacy Andrew began.

Andrew died March 5, 2007, in Samarra, Iraq, attempting to rescue comrades trapped in a burning Humvee after it struck an improvised explosive device. Aaron, Andrew's older brother, joined the Army six months earlier and was serving in South Korea when he received the news.

Obama praises 'milestone' Iraqi elections
President Barack Obama called today's parliamentarian elections in Iraq as a "milestone" event and vowed to keep his pledge to remove all U.S. troops from that country by the end of next year.

With Vice President Joe Biden at his side, Obama told reporters in the Rose Garden that the second national election held in Iraq since late dictator Saddam Hussein was deposed in 2003 represented "an important milestone in Iraqi history."

Father, son team up for one station unit training
The saying "like father, like son" is an apt phrase to describe PFC Alan Smith Jr. and his 19-year-old son, PVT Alan Smith III. Both have competitive streaks. Both want to be Infantrymen. And both began one station unit training this week with the 3rd Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry Regiment, 198th Infantry Brigade.

"I always wanted to join the military," said the elder Smith. "I started my family young, raised them and was ready to serve. I started looking into it to give (my son) the college money."

New Fort Benning directive bans salvia possession
Military and civilians who live or work on Fort Benning are restricted from having and using salvia, according to a new directive.

Salvia is a purple plant that can be found in your grandmother's garden, but when the foliage is dried out and smoked, the hallucinogenic effects can be dangerous. Known as salvia divinorum or "Sally D," it is an herb sold legally off post.

Soldier's son gets full ride to West Georgia
Football is something Pacelli High School's Devonte Taylor can't live without, he said.

"I just can't get enough of football," he said. "I like being out there on the field. I try to stay calm and take the game in as it comes my way."

Devonte, son of SSG Reginald and Lakisha Taylor, signed a letter of intent Feb. 3 on National Signing Day at
Pacelli to play football for Division II University of West Georgia.

The 17-year-old senior will receive a full scholarship.

Army Magazine - By LTG Mark Hertling

The staff sergeant was shaking his head as he walked toward me from across the company orderly room. "Sir," he said, exasperated, "I just met the four new privates coming to my platoon. Their eyes are as big as grapefruits, they look nervous as all get-out, and I bet none of them will score higher than 250 on the PT test tomorrow, which will blow the company average. Who knows how they'll do on the range next week........"
