mapThe Fort Benning Tax Center will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday in its new building, Building 328 on Ingersoll, to kick off the 2010 tax season.

Tax attorney CPT Caitlin Chiaramonte said the Tax Center helped more than 6,000 people last year, which equated to more than $610,000 in saved preparation fees.  Soldiers at the Tax Center have trained since November and are prepared for the season, Chiaramonte said.

I'm all about paying tribute to freedom, particularly those individuals willing to give their lives defending it. No one does it better than the National Infantry Museum.

A visit to the 190,000-square-foot facility makes for a somber, yet powerful journey back in time - punctuated by chilling sound effects, interactive features, artifacts and videos documenting the triumphs and hardships of American Soldiers in battle over the past three centuries. From LTC Alexander Hamilton's bayonet-wielding Infantrymen in Yorktown, Va., to today's operations in the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan, their experiences are chronicled in remarkable detail.

926th Preventive Medicine prepares for deploymentThe size of the 926th Preventive Medicine Detachment stands in stark contrast to the magnitude of its mission.

The 11-member unit provides sanitary inspections, epidemiological support, industrial hygiene and air, water and soil sampling for units downrange spread across large battle spaces. The unit returned from a yearlong deployment to Iraq in October 2008 and, in February, will be heading back.

"We are small but mighty," said 1SG Jennifer Bohanon.

The Muscogee County School District and Columbus Police are urging parents to be cautious and teach their children about "Stranger Danger."

According to a Directorate of Emergency Services memo, the warning was prompted by an investigation into the attempted abduction of a Lonnie Jackson Academy student Friday walking near Goodwin and Wright Drive off Buena Vista Road in Columbus.

"Stranger Danger" is the catchphrase associated with teaching children the risks they may face from people they don't know.

Dodgeball league hits ColumbusChildren in elementary and middle schools across the country play dodgeball at recess and in gym class. Now, grown-ups can too, in Columbus.

Ever since the comedy, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, debuted in 2004, starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, the sport has become popular, said Jeff Gonos, who runs the dodgeball league and is founder of Beyond the Game, a social and sports club in Columbus, which offers flag football and whiffle ball.

"Michael Jordan to the Max" Comes to the IMAX

Jerry Wachter/NBAE/Getty ImagesYou don't have to be a basketball fan to be thrilled by the new movie showing at the Patriot Park IMAX. "Michael Jordan to the Max" is a larger- than- life tribute to the most spectacular athlete of this century.

The film documents the real-life story of Michael Jordan on the National Infantry Museum's 5-story high, 70-foot wide screen.  The audience is transported through the drama and excitement of Jordan's career on and off the basketball court over two decades as well as his gravity-defying acrobatics and athleticism.

The film is an inspirational story, focused not just on one man but on the values that also mark the soldier: working hard for a goal, dealing with failure and team work. An activity guide for schools not only ties Jordan's and the Infantry's values into classroom curriculum but also has other lesson plans such as the physics of a slam dunk.
"Michael Jordan to the Max" is only showing for a limited time so check www.nationalifantrymuseum.com for show times or call the box office at 706-685-5800. For military, the tickets are $9.00 for adults and $8.00 for children.

MORE MEMORIAL PAVERS DEDICATED

New commemorative pavers are being dedicated at The National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center today. The 550 granite bricks, honoring Soldiers, their wives, mothers, fathers, siblings and children have been placed along the 20-foot wide, flag-lined Heritage Walk. Nearly 500 people who purchased pavers since the last installation have been invited to the 11:00 am ceremony on January18th.

Each of the new engraved stones has a story. Among them:  the 29 pavers purchased by Columbus orthopedic surgeon Dr. Carl Savory to honor each of his West Point classmates who were killed in action. Another paver honors the recently deceased "devoted Army wife" of former Infantryman and Secretary of the Army Howard 'Bo' Callaway.

The 4×8 pavers are custom engraved to honor anyone, whether associated with the military or not. Proceeds support the operation of the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center. A miniature replica comes with each purchase.  Click here to download a printable order form.
