From the Top
It's a great day to be a Soldier serving in a community that cares for its Soldiers and their families. Thank you all for what you do to support the Fort Benning community. We have a new motto here at the Maneuver Center: One Force, One Fight. Though it applies to how we train Infantry and Armor Soldiers, I think it's an appropriate slogan for our relationship with our neighbors in the Chattahoochee Valley as well. You have proven that together we can make a very real difference. Today we can celebrate a great success. The Combined Federal Campaign is the world's largest and most successful annual, workplace, charity campaign and it's the only charitable campaign effort allowed in the federal workplace. We hoped to reach one million dollars. We actually exceeded that by nearly 110,000 dollars. That's a 13.6 percent increase over last year's campaign. That says a lot about this community.
I want to thank all the unit commanders, the command sergeants major, directors and key personnel who supported CFC efforts and worked hard to encourage our troops and civilian employees to make this campaign a personal priority. Thank you. As many of you know, we focus on six priorities here at the Maneuver Center. As I consider the various ways the Combined Federal Campaign impacts the Army, I realized that it truly supports every one of these priorities in some manner. The most obvious, of course, is the many, many ways it enhances the quality of life for our Soldiers and families. I could stand here till midnight naming the various ways your contributions impact this community, the Army and the entire military. Though you've heard me say it before, I think it bears repeating: It is you, the Soldiers, civilians and families of Fort Benning and our neighbors in the Chattahoochee Valley who put the "excellence" in the Maneuver Center of Excellence. Once Force, One Fight.

Have you seen the 'NEW' Bayonet?
A new year is a great time to embrace change, to turn the page, so to speak. We've done that at The Bayonet - changed. The design has changed. I hope that's a reason why you've turned the page.
We've also rearranged the sections. Now community news is closer to the front, the second section of the paper. This will allow us more flexibility for placing all news. After all, we are a community newspaper and keeping the front two sections of the paper dedicated to our community makes sense.
The sports section is the third section of the paper. This is where you come in. We need you to submit your sports photos and tell us what's going on. If our sports writer, newlywed Rachel Jackson nee Watkins, covered one-third of the intramural and youth sports on post, she would never see her husband or have a weekend off.
The last section of the paper is called Recreation instead of R&R, but the theme remains the same - finding something interesting to do on your time off. The Movie Guy, SGT Junius Stone, continues reviewing the hits and misses of Hollywood. Now he's going to let you know what soon-to-be released movies he's looking forward to seeing. The calendar has a new look;
Cheryl Rodewig has taken control of its design and content. E-mail her at cheryl.rodewig@thebayonet.com if you have a suggestion for things to do.
One thing we've done was to consolidate what's happening on post, community briefs and sports briefs. Now the public service announcements are grouped together in Home Front, located on B2.
One thing that hasn't changed is our commitment to tell the Fort Benning, Maneuver Center of Excellence and Army story - your stories.
Please let us know what you think of the changes. Both the assistant editor John Peeler and I want to hear from you. Our e-mail addresses are part of our bylines now and they're also listed with our telephone numbers in the masthead at the bottom of this page. Tell us what you think. |

Celebrate life, legacy of MLK
Martin Luther King Jr. spent years of his life actively engaged in a war, yet his battlefield differed from the ones known to current-day Soldiers - it was right here in the United States, outside his own front door.
King saluted the same flag as his enemy and was governed by the same laws as those he fought against, but his tactics were those of a quiet rebel willing to temporarily subject himself to battle in pursuit of permanent peace.
Years removed from the legend's time, Fort Benning will join the nation in recalling his contributions to America Thursday at the Benning Conference Center.

Distribution of the new Maneuver Center of Excellence shoulder patch will begin Friday.
Unit leaders should schedule an appointment to pick up patches from MCOE Headquarters and Headquarters Company in Building 2826 by calling 706-545-6160.
Soldiers must replace current patches by Jan. 22. Military Clothing Sales Stores tentatively will begin sales of the new patch in early February. ______________________________________________
During Arctic blasts each winter, Fort Benning turns to a solution that cuts down on natural gas use and generates millions of dollars in annual energy savings.
As temperatures plunged into the teens earlier this week, the Directorate of Public Works got the call from Atmos Energy, its natural gas supplier, to crank up the peak shaving plant Sunday morning on Main Post, officials said. The facility, which moderates the flow of natural gas while maintaining heat levels in buildings across the installation, is activated only a few times each year but might remain on through the weekend - with the tricommunity gripped by the longest sustained cold snap in more than a quarter-century.
Vernon Duck, DPW's energy manager, said "peak shaving" is done in the energy sector to limit use and lower demand on a commodity. ______________________________________________

1 confused student + 1 computer screen = a problem solved by Child, Youth and School Services.
Free access to online tutors is a resource readily available to students who need help.
Online tutoring was implemented to support military children's unique needs created by the deployment and duty-station changes of their parents.
"There's something to be said about moving every two to three years, transitioning into a new school and starting the process all over again," said Tawanna Brown, Fort Benning youth education support services director. "Those are challenges not all school-age children experience."

I'll Be Home for Christmas took on new meaning for Soldiers with the 690th Medical Company (Ground Ambulance). Returning from a yearlong deployment in Iraq, their arrival time changed 12 times before they landed at Lawson Army Airfield after 6 p.m. Dec. 25.
Waiting for the 63 Soldiers were families, friends and a flag that had welcomed home Soldiers of an Iowan family since World War I.
In the family department, six babies were born during the company's 3rd rotation to Southwest Asia. Aleiyah McKenzie, born 11 days after her dad's departure, and her brothers, Gary, 8, and Houston, 5, opened one Christmas present before coming to the airport, said their mom, Angelika. The rest of the gifts waited for dad, SPC Gary McKenzie.

How familiar are you with the Georgia State Capitol?
The four-story Renaissance building in downtown Atlanta has been the seat of government for more than 120 years. Legislators convene there once a year to determine policy, meet with committees, discuss bills and vote. This year, the legislative session begins Monday.
Timothy Frilingos, museum services manager for the Georgia Capitol Museum, invites visitors of all ages to stop by the state capitol, especially while the General Assembly is meeting.

What is it?
The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), a Department of Defense education facility that has been part of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command since it opened in Jan. 2001, celebrates nine years of service to our nation and to our hemisphere on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at Fort Benning, Ga.
The Institute's mission is "to provide professional education and training to eligible personnel of nations of the Western Hemisphere within the context of the democratic principles set forth in the Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS), while fostering mutual knowledge, transparency, confidence, and cooperation among the participating nations and promoting democratic values, respect for human rights, and knowledge and understanding of United States customs and traditions."
Those eligible personnel are military, law enforcement, and government civilian employees from any OAS nation; that includes Canada, the U.S., and Caribbean basin nations.

Since 1988, Agatha's - A Taste of Mystery has wined and dined its patrons with a flavorful mixture of humor and homicide. Atlanta's original murder mystery dinner theater lets you jump into the action as one of several minor characters offering a clue to whodunit. Play amateur sleuth and guess at the murderer's identity. But be careful: It could be the person sitting next to you - or it could even be you.
The appetizer - Upon entering Agatha's, you'll be greeted by the actors, in character, and, if you choose, given a role to play during the evening. The slip of paper with your lines tells you what act you'll be part of and when to look for your cue. You don't need more than that. Feel free to ham it up, use spontaneous props - silverware comes to mind - or just read it cold. Either way, you're sure to get a round of applause for your performance. ______________________________________________
