From The Top
November 16th, 2009
The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, or TAPS, is one of the greatest organizations I know whereby the families and friends of fallen service members can heal and find solace in the company of others who have endured the same kind of tragedy.
Last week, Fort Benning had the distinct honor of hosting a TAPS Survivor Seminar for adults and a Good Grief Camp for the children of our fallen heroes. More than 160 people participated in the event, representing service members from the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy and Reserves.
I extended to these families a welcome on behalf of the Fort Benning community, and I encouraged them to consider themselves at home. No matter what uniform their loved ones wore, these survivors are members of our great Army Strong Family. The fact that they traveled from far and wide to participate in this event, to heal and help others heal, speaks to their strength and resilience.
As you know, we have a saying in the military community - those who wait also serve. As we head into the holiday season, let us remember those whose wait is over, but did not end the way we would have wished it to. We are thankful for the service of these great American patriots and the sacrifices borne by their loved ones.
And we are especially thankful today for the TAPS team of heroes, who reach beyond their own pain to extend a hand to others who are grieving. As always, a hearty thank you to the Fort Benning FMWR team for making this event possible. To learn more about the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, go to www.taps.org.

WASHINGTON (Army News Service, Nov. 13, 2009) -- While the mental health and morale of Soldiers in Iraq is improving, according to the latest study, more behavioral-health providers are needed in Afghanistan.

Wrestling season is here. It gears up in November and lasts through March, making the perfect winter activity for kids who play sports during other seasons, said Air Force Lt. Col. Hiram Morales, head coach for the Child, Youth & School Services wrestling team.
"We at Fort Benning have a one-of-a-kind program - the largest program in the city, and for some age groups, probably the largest in the south Georgia area," Morales said. "We know many kids over the winter are not active with sports. Many are football players; others are baseball players, so this provides the perfect cross-training opportunity for them to stay fit in strength, in stamina, aerobic fitness, and also to remain flexible."

For 40 years, Herbert J. Dexter Elementary School has gone without a picture of its namesake. That changed Nov. 6 when, for the school's 40th anniversary, the parent teacher organization presented a portrait of MAJ Herbert Dexter. "That face right there," said Vicki McGorray, Dexter's oldest child, of the portrait. "That's dad's face when he chased us on Sunday morning playing Frankenstein, but we think it may have been the one he showed his men, too."
