From the TopMaj. Gen. Ferriter
September 25, 2009

It was a  pleasure to host the 2009 Infantry Warfighting Conference.  It was a great success for a number of reasons.  We had more than 1,300 registered attendees - including 60 general and flag officers - 1,200 students who participated each day, and nearly 300 industry partners representing companies from all over the world. Overall, a tremendous turnout!

This conference is vital to the welfare of our nation because it allows us to focus on critical issues that impact not only the Infantry, but the whole Army. It is paramount that we continue to share battle-proven techniques and future capabilities with our brothers in arms.

This conference would not have been possible without all of the units, organizations and directorates working together as a team.  To the U.S. Army Infantry Center staff, Fort Benning Garrison, and the commanders and Soldiers of the 192nd, 197th, 198th, 199th, and the Ranger Training Brigade, thank you for doing an exemplary job in planning and executing this year's conference.

At the Infantry Warfighting Conference Tuesday, Gen. Gold Star Mother's Day is Sept. 27
Mothers of fallen servicemembers began calling themselves "Gold Star Mothers" during the First World War, but the sorrowful bond they share reaches back to every woman who has lost a son or daughter in uniform since our nation's revolution. The Army cherishes the mothers of its Soldiers as bedrocks of support and comfort, and honors the mothers of its fallen as resilient legacies of their children's service. The United States began observing Gold Star Mothers Day on the last Sunday of September in 1936.

This year, the Army joins the nation on September 27th in recognizing the sacrifice and strength of its Gold Star Mothers.
