The Army Family Covenant is more than a document.  It's a commitment, and I believe it is important every now and then to come together to reaffirm our convictions that the heart and soul and strength of our Army is our families.  And to renew our promise to those families.
We make it a priority to enhance the quality of life of our Soldiers and their families.  That alone is a remarkable thing, unique to our American military.
America's strength is its Army.  The Army's strength is its Soldiers.  And the Soldiers' strength is their families.  It's no stretch to say the strength of America depends on the strength, the well-being and resilience of our Army families.
Today we pledge to take care of our families, to continue to improve healthcare for them, to provide them with affordable, comfortable, contemporary housing communities with amenities designed to enhance their quality of life.  We pledge to make available to them many, many opportunities to develop their professional skills through educational and employment programs.
We pledge to take care of the youngest members of the Fort Benning family, our children.  This is perhaps the most enjoyable part of our job.  We will continue to explore new and exciting opportunities for our children through Youth Services programs, sports and outdoor recreation.

When Soldiers on the Maneuver Center TDA don new shoulder insignia during the MCOE activation ceremony Oct. 1, it will be a newer version of the MCOE patch introduced in February 2008.  Fort Benning's chief of staff, COL. Chuck Durr, made the announcement earlier this week.

The new octagonal design, approved by the Army Institute of Heraldry and the Army G1, replaces the spear-shaped patch that was often perceived as an upside-down Follow Me patch.  The interior design remains the same.

The MCOE shoulder insignia, motto and crest were designed from a compilation of suggestions submitted during a 2007 Armywide design contest, of sorts.

A spokesman for AAFES said the new patch will be available in stores in about 90 days.
