From the Top
This week we celebrate the kickoff of the 48th annual Combined Federal Campaign.
The CFC is a very proud Fort Benning tradition. For nearly five decades, we have come together to offer very generous support to the organizations that make a difference in the lives of our Soldiers and their families. We support the agencies that support us.
The Combined Federal campaign is the world's largest and most successful workplace charity campaign. Since 1961, the federal community has donated more than six billion dollars to the CFC - more than $275 million last year alone.
And the non-profit organizations and agencies that participate have used that money to improve the quality of life for those within our community who require some form of health or human services.
Fort Benning is a giving, caring community. It is that kind of selfless sacrifice that makes this installation a great place to live and work. Our mission today is to get the word out to our Soldiers, civilian employees and Fort Benning families, to make sure everyone knows about the opportunity CFC offers. Follow Me! Michael Ferriter Major General, U.S. Army Commanding General

MCOE Public Affairs
When the new School Age Services and Child Care Center opens later this month, it will mark a milestone in the post's transformation to the Maneuver Center of Excellence.
The facility will be the first complete BRAC-funded project, one of $3.5 billion worth of construct in the MCOE build-up.
According to Jay Brown, BRAC project manager, all construction projects are on or ahead of schedule. By year's end, $2.3 billion worth of construction contracts will have been awarded.
To date, the Residential Communities Initiative has completed the construction of more than 1,060 new homes on post. Early plans called for 4,200 homes when the housing build up is complete, but noise levels at the ranges off Dixie Road curtailed construction of about 200 homes in the old Bouton Heights/Davis Hill community, decreasing the number of on-post homes to 4,000. That means local housing markets, already gearing up for the arrival of approximately 4,200 families who will staff or support the Armor School, can now expect to accommodate 200 additional families who would have otherwise lived on post.
Gary Jones, executive vice president of military affairs for the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, will address the challenges Fort Benning's growth will bring to the Valley at the monthly BRAC Community Update Sept. 1 at the National Infantry Museum.
Following the update, guests will be given an opportunity to ask questions. As always, the event is free and open to the public. It will start at 3 p.m. and last about an hour.

THE BATTLE OF FALLUJAH, NOVEMBER 2004 CPT Daniel Kilgore
As a platoon leader in A Company, Task Force 2-7 Cavalry, I participated in the battle of Fallujah in November 2004. My story encompasses the triumph, tragedy, and cumulative effects of this battle on the 35 Soldiers of 1st Platoon.
Fallujah became a breeding ground for the growing insurgency in the fall of 2003, its streets consistently taking the lives of the Soldiers and Marines who ventured in. Following the massacre of four contractors in March 2004, a major operation was ordered to quell this insurgent stronghold. This, however, did not go through due to the well laid defenses of the insurgent opposition. Over the course of the following eight months, Fallujah turned into the safe haven, housing notable figures such as Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi and many of his commanders.
After the USMC's success in the Battle of An-Najaf against Al-Sadr's Mahdi Army in August 2004, notably due to select 1st Cavalry Division task forces, it was a natural result for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force to specifically ask for 2-7 CAV in the assault into Fallujah in November 2004.
Alpha Company, 2-7 CAV had the highest of morale following its success in the Battle of Najaf, resulting in numerous awards for valor. I stepped into Alpha Company at the end of the battle, following two platoon leaders' dismissals. Having to reestablish the validity of an officer in the Soldiers' minds, as well as fight the daily fight, did not prove as easy as the vignettes from my Military Science classes. As I gained the trust of the NCOs and Soldiers over the ensuing three months, we saw our battalion moving towards the realization that we would be soon assaulting Fallujah...
