From the Top
August 21, 2009
Greetings!
Throughout the history of this nation, women have answered the call to serve whenever and wherever they were needed. They have served in the Army since 1775. Back then, they nursed the sick and wounded, they laundered and mended clothing, and they cooked for the troops in combat. These were necessary, inglorious and invaluable services. The role of women in the Army has evolved. Today's female Soldier is an essential member of the Army team. She serves in 91 percent of all Army occupations and makes up 14 percent of the active Army. She continues to break down barriers wherever her service takes her, both in peacetime and in war. Times have changed. But one thing remains the same. Women still play a crucial role in our efforts to secure freedom throughout the world. Whether she wears the uniform of the US Army or stands beside a man who wears that uniform, our Army Strong Women continue to serve selflessly, sacrificially, tirelessly and quite often, ingloriously. Today we salute the courageous women who serve this nation at home and abroad. Follow Me!
Michael Ferriter Major General, U.S. Army Commanding General

Maneuver News
Community Update Sept. 1 at the National Infantry Museum.
Bridgett Siter
MCOE Public Affairs
Growth and progress on Fort Benning means growth and progress in the Chattahoochee Valley.
Fort Benning's transition to the Maneuver Center of Excellence, the result of the 2005 Base Realignment at Closure decision to move the Armor School to Fort Benning, will bring about 30,000 new residents to the Valley, most of them permanent party Soldiers, civilian employees and family members. Since the number of houses being built on post will not increase to meet the demand, local housing markets will see a boost in sales and rentals, and local schools will see an increased enrollment of more than 6,000 students.
Gary Jones, executive vice president of military affairs for the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, will address the challenges Fort Benning's growth will bring to the Valley at the monthly BRAC Community Update Sept. 1 at the National Infantry Museum.
Jay Brown, BRAC project manager, will give a brief, broad overview of where we are in contract, construction and hiring processes. Following the updates by Brown and Jones, guests will be given an opportunity to ask questions.
As always, the event is free and open to the public. It will start at 3 p.m. and last about an hour.
For more information, call 706-545-6169.

Fort Benning ERP provides a full range of information and referral services and assistance in the areas of employment, training and volunteer opportunities. The services are designed to give all active duty, retired military personnel, DoD employees, their Family members (adults and teenagers) and eligible personnel the competitive edge necessary to secure employment. Services include job counseling, job search training, employment and educational information, information on volunteer opportunities, internet job search and assistance in resume writing and goal setting. The purpose of the program is to minimize the employment problems associated with relocation.
