Overcoming Obstacles

Aug2011 EBlast PF profile

The Shanmugalingam Family is a loving family with two daughters who live with disabilities. As both of them are in wheelchairs it can be difficult to manoeuvre around their small apartment. In a large building with hundreds of families and children, getting down the elevators with wheelchairs can be very troublesome. Most of the time, Mathivathana Shanmugalingam, the mother of the two daughters would have to make two trips to get them down and during rush hours the family would sometimes have to wait for hours to get a spot in the elevators. There are also major issues with the management of the building, who take a long time to repair washrooms, and kitchens. Cleanliness is also a problem in the building. Garbage piles up in the garbage room, which causes inconvenience for the Shanmugalingam family as there is no accessibility to the streets without exiting through the garbage room.

The children love being outside in the sun and to feel the breeze in their faces. They like to play together, talk, listen and move to music. They would love a place where they can get out easily to the back yard and enjoy the outdoors without having to worry about elevator conjunctions, or inaccessibility. This would create free time for Mathi to relax and enjoy life with her daughters. It would also make it easier to install equipment for better access to bedrooms and the bathroom for the girls.

"It's my dream" says Mathi when asked what "home" means to her. She says that her first priority is her daughters and creating a better life for them is all that she hopes for.

Crew Leader Corner
DANNY HO
Crew Leader Corner Danny

Since February 2011, 4572 Kingston Rd hasn't been the same...the energy level has skyrocketed and the smile count has been through the roof; for this, we can thank Danny Ho! After being made Crew Leader in April, Danny quickly became a crew member favorite. Besides his great sense of humor and positive attitude, Danny has the ability to lead, motivate and encourage volunteers to work hard and drive nails even harder!

Unfortunately, Danny's time with Habitat Toronto is being put on hold until next summer while he attends Brock University. He has made it clear that he has a bad case "Habititus" and will be on the hunt for a Habitat affiliate once he's settled in to his new city. Your hard work, dedication, and passion are truly inspiring and greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for all of your hard work, Danny and although you wont be on a HFHT site you will always be apart of the Habitat family! OYEE!

July Build Update

Block D is now complete for five families to move in to their homes this month. Framing the eight units for Block B will begin this month, while Block A gets some additional framing complete- that means drywalling will begin this month!

August 9th will be the ground breaking day for this site.  Volunteers will be on-site one month later to build these two barrier-free homes, and six semi-detached houses.

Plans are in place to break ground on 12 semi-detached homes this September. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on volunteer opportunities and the Groundbreaking event for this site at the end of the summer.

Located just north of Danforth Avenue in south Scarborough, this site is in the permitted process. Groundbreaking for ten semi-detached homes is scheduled for late Fall 2011.
