Big dreams for a simple home
Originally from Guyana, Clement Khemraj likes to think big. With limited education options, he knew that if he wanted to be a success he had to make a move. With his wife Lillwatie, they moved to Canada where Clement got a second chance at school, obtaining his degree in Business Administration and later, a Masters degree. It was a struggle to keep everything afloat such as rent, school tuition and living needs. The small family was also growing.  First came son Ryan in 1990, followed by Austin in 1994, and Branson in 1996. Living in a 2 bedroom apartment for the 5 of them, their hardships haven't only been financial though. Ryan was born with cerebral palsy.

Even with their big dreams, education and hardworking outlook, the Khemraj family could not qualify for a standard mortgage. Wanting to do everything possible for their family, Lillwatie and Clement went to a Habitat Toronto information session and realized that there was another way to purchase a home: with the help of Habitat for Humanity Toronto.  Once approved and eager to get started, they finished the 500 sweat equity hours in just five weeks, working seven days a week! Now the family is looking forward to their new Habitat Toronto home at the Macey and St. Dunstan development and the new opportunities the future will bring.

Meet the Khemrajs and seven other families when they help break ground on the site of their new homes on August 9, 2011 at the Macey & St. Dunstan development. Click here to read other partner family homeowner stories.

Crew Leader Corner
July Crew Leader Corner
Dianna Armstrong first got involved with Habitat for Humanity Toronto during the Women Build in 2009 and by spring 2010 she was wearing an orange Crew Leader T-shirt! With her bright green hard hat and warm smile, Dianna creates an environment that motivates volunteers to work hard and have a great time. When asked about her most memorable moment on a Habitat Toronto site, Dianna responded "I saw partner family children playing and enjoying themselves in their new community in front of their new homes. The pleasure of knowing that you are helping families is very rewarding." Dianna's love and passion to help others and learn new things has not only had a positive impact on partner families but also the crew leaders and volunteers who work alongside her. Whether she is arriving with a batch of her famous home-made cookies or baked goods, Dianna is always ray of sunshine on a Habitat Toronto build site.

Build Update
July Build Update
Blocks C & D are now complete for five families to move in to their homes this month. Volunteers continue to be busy framing the eight units for Block B, while the newly installed roof on Block A gets its shingles installed this weekend - that means drywalling will begin this month!

August 9th will be the ground breaking day for this site.  Volunteers will be on-site one month later to build these two barrier-free homes, and six semi-detached houses.

Plans are in place to break ground on 12 semi-detached homes this August. Keep your eyes peeled for more information on volunteer opportunities and the Groundbreaking event for this site at the end of the summer.

Located just north of Danforth Avenue in south Scarborough, this site is in the permitted process. Groundbreaking for ten semi-detached homes is scheduled for late Fall 2011.
