Escaping troubles for a happy home
The Mohamud FamilyHalimo Mohamud was only 22 when she moved to Canada from Somalia in 1990. Halimo now has three children: Mohamud, Saed and her youngest Riyaaq. Life was going well for Halimo and her family, but a gradual degradation in their living conditions worried Halimo. As her building became more dirty, rats crept in and now infest the dwelling.

Halimo looks forward to escaping her crime ridden neighbourhood and moving in to her own Habitat Toronto home. Mohamud will be going to university next year and by partnering with Habitat for Humanity Toronto, she hopes her other children will follow in his successful footsteps. In fact, Riyaaq has already shown a keen interest in buildings and wants to become an architect someday! "A Habitat Toronto home is a place where I can escape my outside troubles and where my family can feel safe and happy," she says. "I can't wait to decorate and feel happy in my new home! "

The Mohamuds will join eight other families when they receive the keys to their new Habitat Toronto home on Tuesday, June 21st. Click here to read more on the Mohamuds and other family stories.

Crew Leader Corner
June Crew Leader Corner
Instead of travelling or relaxing at home, Amy Lyon spent her month off work trying something new and volunteering for Habitat Toronto for the first time. Amy loved her experience at the Hainford development so much that she has since organized her work schedule to make room for two days a week dedicated to volunteering for Habitat Toronto! Her commitment and love of construction landed her the Crew Leader title, and she (and we!) couldn't be more thrilled. Amy fell in love with Habitat Toronto right from the start so she always tries to make sure that her new volunteers have the same experience. Amy's new build site expertise and passion for construction has even led her to enroll in George Brown's Building Renovation program! We wish Amy all the best as she begins her program this fall and look forward to many more great build experiences on site.
