"Home means everything"
Okorie Family
(L-R) Former Board Chair Toni Rossi smiles with Akuobiama and Uchenna at the Women Build Dedication.
For Akuobioma Okorie and son Uchenna, partnership with Habitat Toronto promises a real homecoming at last.

In Canada since 2002, Akuobioma, a single mother and native of Nigeria, describes current living conditions filled with anxieties. "Living in our current apartment is stressful and frustrating." The Okorie family's current substandard living conditions at her co-op apartment has water draining from an upstairs neighbour, odours and cigarette smoke, and infestations of cockroaches. Akuobioma was even trapped once in a broken elevator that smelled like urine for nearly an hour.

The Okories' also find their building very dangerous, Akuobioma says. "None of the tenants are screened for police records," she explains, remembering sleepless nights spent monitoring her front door. "The first day I moved in, three people were shot and I've been told that one person was killed a year before."

Akuobioma learned about Habitat for Humanity Toronto when she saw a Home Dedication and Key Ceremony on the news. She was so impressed with the cooperation among volunteers and felt encouraged to apply.

"Home," says Akuobioma, "means everything: a place of joy and happiness; means everything. It's a place of joy and happiness, and a place you can regain energy lost after an exhausting day." The new space "will allow us to have a house we call our own."

Akuobiama and her son Uchenna received the key to their new Habitat home on Mother's Day and will be moving in this coming June.

Crew Leader Corner
May, 2011 Crew Leader Corner
John Sanderson got his first taste of Habitat Toronto during the ReTooling Blitz at 4572 Kingston Rd. in September, 2010. Since then, he has committed every Friday to the cause. John recently retired from the information technology field, but has always liked building things. He jokes that Habitat Toronto allows him to selfishly learn new skills, but adds that he has the added bonus of giving back to the community. John has also really enjoyed working with, and getting to know,  Homeowner Moulitharan Asaipillai. He notes that when he's "working alongside the person who will be receiving one of the homes, it reminds me to take extra care in building safe, decent, and affordable homes."
