March 2010

Greetings!

Happy Spring, it is such a pleasure to begin to enjoy the sunshine and warmer weather. I can't wait for the daffodils to start to come up!

This month as we start to gaze out our windows more often, turning our focus outdoors, we will explore one of the key elements that will give your rooms that polished, pulled together WOW look.

Window Treatments the key accessory for that WOW factor
Have you ever looked at one of your rooms and felt something was missing.  It lacks that pulled together look you see in all of the design magazines. You have all of the key elements - furnishings, rugs, lighting, but it's still missing something. The solution is not as difficult as you think.

Window Treatments not only frame the windows they add that finished touch that pulls the room together.  Choosing the appropriate treatment for the room and your home is the key. We will explore three different treatment options that may be right for your home.

If you have a beautiful view and don't need the privacy, panels can be installed that frame just the outside edges of the windows. This can be as simple as a straight panel pinch pleated on the top with rod and rings, or for more formal rooms, elaborate panels with valances and jabots.

For a much simpler approach, a Roman Shade might be an option.  This too can take many forms.  A straight Roman Shade that is easy to lower and raise, or fuller fabric shades that enhance the window but doesn't block the view.

If you feel panels or shades are too fussy, another option would be to simply top the windows with a short valance.  This approach doesn't work for all rooms or situations, but can be very effective to just add a touch to a bare window frame.

Ask the Designer
How do I clean and protect my granite and marble?

-    Spills need to be wiped up as they occur.  Foods that have an acidic base may stain your marble - orange juice, red wine, tomatoes are the big culprits.

-    On a weekly basis clean your stone floors with a drop of liquid Ivory soap and warm soapy water.

-    Counter tops can be cleaned with ammonia free windex. Adds a great shine.

-    Every few years, depending on use and traffic, the stone should be re-sealed and polished by a professional.
