Luna Update -  August 18, 2011
                                                   from: Samuel & Kendra Luna

The Villagers need your HELP!  Prayers and financial support are currently needed!  Is Haiti still on your heart?  See ways to help below!

Dear  ,

We are very excited to share the good news happening in Haiti at Village de Nouvelle Vie (New Life Village)!  After many months of planning and construction, the village has been inhabited by 25 needy families who have relocated from tent camps.

The first 14 families came together in one box truck - all their belongings and the people!  It was a good dose of reality for us when they came with only two matresses among all these families.

We spent a lot of time praying for God to connect us with the right families who were the most needy.  These people found us and then came singing a hymn when they pulled up to the site in the box truck!  After the song, the nazarene Pastor who moved with them read Psalms 133 and said a prayer for their new home.

Time was spent educating the new villagers on proper sanitation, hygiene, and other aspects revolving around the village and how to make this home look different than what they are used to.

The rest of the families have moved in over the last few weeks and had a

meeting to  decide on the name of their new home.  They decided on Village de Nouvelle Vie, which translates in English to New Life Village. In addition, one woman has already had a new baby boy who was born in the village in her shelter!

One item that was important to us as well was a health assessment for each family. We were fortunate to have a Doctor friend come to the site on a Sunday afternoon to allow free check-ups for all the families. From this assessment, we learned that everyone in the village had anemia and parasites while most had a variety of other illnesses ranging from infections to severe malnutrition to a possbile case of prostate cancer.  One women even found out she was pregnant!

When all the families were settled, we still had plenty of work to do.  Because the village is a little isolated in a rural setting, it was important to us to support and facilitate microenterprise possibilities, agricultural farming, and other vital opportunities to increase livelihood.

One of our most recent projects has been in developing an agricultural plot for the families to have a community garden.  God sent us a wonderful Pastor named Pastor Abne' to help us with this.  His focus is on teaching the families nutrition as well as how to grow crops and take care of their children.

Since our trip, this land has been prepared for seeds and today, as I write, ClearBlue is digging a well to supply water to the agricultural land!  Praise the Lord and THANK YOU ClearBlue!

We also want to pass along a huge THANK YOU from the villagers for all your support and for the Pavilion donated by the Davison Free Methodist Church in Davison, MI.  The pavilion has provided some much needed shade for the people and acts as a gathering place.  It is located next to the only source of electricity, a solar security light donated by Digicel. Many church services, prayer times, and community meetings have already taken place under this community pavilion!

So, what's next for the people of Village de Nouvelle Vie? Take a look at the list below of all the exciting things currently in progress and future opportunities to be pursued!

  • Livelihood and micro-enterprise opportunities through Fonkoze and Oxfam.
  • World Vision - Cash for work beginning in August for our villagers
  • ACTED - committed to building better temporary housing made of plywood
  • UNICEF - providing "child-friendly spaces" (play equipment and supplies to keep children safe in the sometimes harsh environments)
  • Clear Blue - installing a water well on our agriculture land with the possibility of another well in the village.
  • Water Missions International - Installing a complete commercial water filtration system that will serve Village de Nouvelle Vie and the surrounding community. (To be installed in September)
  • Pro Huerta - Pastor Abne' is consulting the families on the local agricultural for family gardens and larger planting.
  • UN Paraguayan Military - began labor for 600 meters of fencing in the village and the agriculture land.  Village fencing is complete as of this email!
  • Hope Seeds - furnished vegetable seeds for each family's garden.
  • Bio-digester and solar oven possibilities.
  • Victory Compassion - The Victory Church from Tulsa, OK's mission in Haiti.  They have provided teams for construction for us, tree planting, pastoral support to our Pastor, and have been gracious enough to allow us to stay at their compound during some of our most recent trips.  We are so grateful for their team and friendship! They have been such a blessing.

A few people from the village took a group picture with me on my last day.  Emily Hendershot stayed for 2 weeks longer.

Security Men

We have made lots of friends while working with the United Nations. Here are team members Carter Cassion, Emily Hendershot, and Xiomara Fernandez with the UN Police from a variety of countries.

Bobcat in hole.

Haiti is always an adventure!  Here we are using Floyd (the van) to pull a borrowed bobcat out of a hole that was to be used for garbage.

Thank you for your continued support of the Haitian people and their recovery.  Your prayers and support are felt throughout the trips and work.  We told them that people from all over the United States are praying for them and they wanted us to share that they are praying for you too.

PRAYER REQUESTS:

  • God has multiplied our resources many times, but at this moment the Haiti funds are currently in the red. We want to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that are available to us while the village is still developing.
  • For the salvation of those in the village.  We have shown evangelistic movies and been able to pass out donated Bibles as well as a Christian Trauma Recovery course and Christian comics to the children.
  • Pray for Pastor Louis Pierre Elissaint as he leads the village and brings vital spiritual and practical leadership to the villagers. Please also be in prayer as he may have a life threatening illness. We can see that his leadership is so important to the overall environment created at the village.
  • For a small team in September whose on-site presence is vital to the building of the better temporary shetlers through ACTED, the commerical water filtration system through Water Missions International, connecting with World Vision's Cash For Work, meeting with the Paraguayan UN, etc. for 3 weeks.
  • That God would hear the people's prayers and meet the hunger needs in the village.
