Luna Haiti and Dominican Update - May 9, 2010
from: Samuel & Kendra Luna |
 |
| Greetings!
I am sorry for the lapse in our communication over the last month! After the January Haiti crisis, I (Kendra) had been doing most of our communication and administrative work between 3-7 AM on a daily basis. Since mid-April, I haven't been able to manage starting my day quite that early!!
Even if we have not expressed our gratitude through personal letters or e-mails, we want you to know that we greatly appreciate your partnership, prayers, financial gifts and many expressions of care over these recent months.
During the month of April many things have happened in our lives: we went to Haiti twice, hosted a team from our home church in Michigan for 2 weeks, spoke at 2 pastors forums and a strategy meeting on Haiti, arranged for a thousand pounds of protien drinks to be flown into Port-au-Prince, networked with Students International ministry whose staff of 25 spent several days in our Delmas 6 camp, cleaned up the lower level of our home after a plumbing problem caused nasty waters to flow and continued NET ministry in Jarabacoa through adding a new 7th Bison youth club & expanding the micro enterprise loans to include 30 women. We made a weekend family trip to the beach with the boys. |

Please don't forget to pray for Haiti!!
Although news coverage has dwindled and many aid agencies are leaving Haiti; still thousands of homeless and jobless Haitians are left to face the rainy season with only a tarp over their heads
and little food. Pray that our Haitian brothers and sisters would be strengthened to boldly share
the hope and peace Christ can bring even in the most desperate situations!
Prayer Requests regarding the Delmas 6 refugee camp we have adopted .....
(200 families representing 1775 people):
Our family will drive to Port-au-Prince on Tuesday to spend a week in the camp.
1.) Pray for Shelter - The rains have begun and only half of the 200 families in the camp have tents! I have been working with Shelterbox for 3 months now with very slow progress! There have been numerous unfulfilled commitments to bring tents after e-mails and at least 50 phone calls! On a couple of occasions, the leadership committee of the camp asked families to move their makeshift homes to make space. Shelterbox said they were coming that day to bring tents. After Shelterbox didn't show up and the people slept outside for several nights and still no tents - people's morale is affected. In spite of the people's preparation of the land, there
has not been one new tent in 3 weeks. Prisca painfully told me that the people think the leadership committee is not telling them the truth. I just spoke to a Shelterbox representative
last night: he told me he would visit Delmas 6 to reassess the situation.
Would you pray that God would provide tents for each family still in need - this week? Maybe every time you walk through the front door of your house, you could remember to pray for this need. This is going to take God-size power!
2.) Transitional Housing Possibilities - I met with an agency that is giving free building materials for a simple one room 12' X 18' structure with a poured cement floor and tin roof. The catch is that families need to have land in their name or a contract to be able to stay on the land they are located on for at least 3 years. Pray for guidance, as we explore options of possible purchase or rental of land for the 200 families of the camp.
3.) Spiritual Growth and Salvation - Pray that people in the camp would come to know what it
Francina, Sabrina, Jonny, Prisca, Simon | means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Pray for a Haitian pastor with a calling to disciple people in the camp and facilitate people's emotional and psychological healing.
Pray for unity and wisdom among the leadership committee of the camp. For the first time, I received a call this morning that there was some tension within the camp leadership committee. The longer people go without proper food, shelter, rest and work, the higher the frustration level rises.
4.) Food - Pray that the Lord would provide basic food items for the people. It has been 3 weeks since there have been any sizable food provisions distributed in the camp. Aid groups are leaving the country, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to bring trucks of food across the border from the Dominican Republic. There is a truck from the Dominican FM church stuck at the border currently. As much as we want to be careful not to create dependency, people are without jobs
and food prices in Port-au-Prince are elevated. People are hungry.
5.) Guidance and Protection - Pray for protection, health, and guidance as we take our boys to Haiti for the first time. Pray that the Lord would use Landon, Nathan and Andersen to minister to others prtect their young hearts as they process what they will see. It is a 12-15 hour drive each way. Pray that the Lord would fill each of our hearts with his grace. We feel a particular urgency on this trip to see God's hand of provision, unity and guidance move decisively. When our strength is exhausted, we recognize our dependence on His strength and grace. |

You may remember me telling the story of Edwani who was 7 month pregnant and had a 3 year old son (Vanderlin) at the time of the earthquake. Her husband was killed when the Free Methodist mission building collapsed. Edwani gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Vanderlin is a proud big brother The baby's name is Jeanne after Pastor Jeanne who lost her life in the quake. |
We continue investigating the most effective ways to help with shelter,
food, water and better sanitation. If you are interested in being a part of meeting urgent needs in Haiti please SEND A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION TO the Davison Free Methodist Church marked "Haiti Project Shelter/Sanitation" on the note line. The mailing address is: 502 Church St. Davison MI 48423. Please e-mail kendra.luna5@gmail.com so we can track your contribution and utilize your gift quickly. These are pictures from projects the team from Davison FM church worked on in the Dominican Republic. In Jarabacoa, we built a covered cafeteria and reconstructed playground equipment for a school for shoe shine street-boys. This is a ministry of the church we attend which is Amor a Quisqueya.

We also worked up in the high mountain community of Paso Bajito. This is a community
development project and church we partnered in planting 11 years ago. In Paso Bajito, we
installed windows to keep the rain out and helped repaint. Along with children's ministry, we helped lay a sidewalk and landscape an area in front of "Casa de Celebracion". |

Our deepest appreciation extends to those who have loved with their actions and given so generously!
