Kendra is continuing to work with the Spring Arbor VISA team in PAP Haiti. The report is that this team is a very motivated and hard working crew! I was forwarded an e-mail written by one of the team members that included the following miracle story.
"Kendra Luna and some of our group left with a truck in hopes of finding some food for a "tent city" (refugee camp) of 200 homeless families, approx. 1000 people just down the road from FOHO. We went to an area near the PAP airport that UNICEF has control of. We were getting the run-around from many people and filling out paperwork that seemed like it was pointless because it was going nowhere. We spoke with a Jamaican man who worked for UNICEF and he told our group to head back toward the airport closer to where the Jamaican military is. This area is where all the various international militaries are. He said they had some extra stuff that we might be able to get. As we were moving down there and pulled into this camp, we noticed 5 huge dump trucks. One of them was being unloaded by hand. We pulled alongside and started talking to the other drivers. The drivers were all from the Dominican Republic so Kendra was able to speak to them. One of them said he could not do anything without approval. Kendra then persuaded the other driver and he said to pull up and he would let us take some stuff. After only about 15 minutes our truck was FILLED many boxes high with food, water, clothes, shoes, medical supplies, sanitary supplies and baby items. No paperwork was needed and all the items were free!! We then drove out of there and no questions were asked. It was as if we were supposed to be there - and after looking back, we were!! To think that God knew EXACTLY what He was doing and His timing was perfect. God's hand of guidance was at work. Your prayers are truly being felt here in Haiti."
I spoke with Kendra, last night, very briefly on the phone. She reported that they have been able to acquire several truck loads of various needed supplies from "unique" God directed locations around PAP. 5000 pounds of canned sardines was one of the cherished items. She is going to Deselines Hospital and the PeVee's Orphanage today with many of the medical supplies they have found and others some of you have given. She also asked that I share with you the vital need for mosquito nets by the Haitian families living outside. The Dengue Fever (Mosquito carried) is causing concerns.
Marty (Kendra's dad) visited one of the refugee camps (NET CAMP) where the "Renewable Haiti Water Project" has been delivering pure drinking water over the past 3 weeks. While he was there, Kendra brought a doctor to visit the camp. After a quick tour of the 100+ families, he stated that "this camp DOES NOT have the diseases that many others do." He attributed this to the pure drinking water they have been receiving. Thank you to: Davison Michigan, Petersburg Alaska, Dominican Community Church, NET supporters, and many of you who have provided for these Haitian people. A huge "Thank you" also goes to Raul Fermin who has generously driven and provided his truck for 6+ "water runs" to PAP from Santo Domingo.(6+ hours one way) Sami and Kendi have located a pure water supply just on the outskirts of PAP, which is now allowing the water delivery to be more efficient with less transportation cost. The water delivery continues to be lifesaving for many!
Marty & I have begun to research the best tent structures available for the refugees. Yesterday we visited a missionary in Santiago who has designed a tent made of thick vinyl lashed to a PVC pipe frame. They are portable, sturdy,& light weight, but very small. We are praying for God's direction in this research.
As Samuel & Kendra, continue to work with the 5 person Haitian leadership team in the refugee camp at Delmas #6 (NET CAMP), they are very pleased with the organization and cooperation of this community's development. Many of these 100+family groups were strangers until January 12th. The numbered campsites (sometimes painted on their sheet houses) and orderly disbursement of supplies indicate the effects of this strong internal leadership team. Doris Fermin is assisting the Lunas in creating and issuing a survey to the camp residents to help assess future plans for these refugees. Doris is a Spring Arbor Graduate who is working with Compassion International in Santo Domingo. She has had vast experience in community development planning. She and her husband Raul have been invaluable partners with Kendra & Samuel in their Haiti relief efforts.
Samuel will return to Haiti on Tuesday to continue to work with this Haitian leadership team at the Delmas-6 NET camp. Pray that God will give him wisdom as how to best help.
