The past few days have been very active here at the Lunas' house as Kendra has been preparing to host a Spring Arbor Mich. VISA team into Haiti. Buying pics, shovels, wheel barrows, sledges, crowbars, saws, and groceries was a challenge, but fitting them into their Toyota Corolla was an even bigger challenge. In the same trip we were also transporting 140 (12x14) plastic tarps for a Haitian refugee camp. (Needless to say I was holding a lot of bread & toilet paper on my lap) Thankfully their 1989 jeep repairs were completed in time to load everything into and "on-top of" it for the trip to the Haitian Border yesterday. They picked up the Spring Arbor team of 13 plus 30 pieces of luggage with a van and truck at the Santo Domingo Airport. Their neighbor friends, Daniel, Hector, & Josue' were extremely helpful in packing. (pic#1) NorJan & Funa are their Dominican Haitian translators and Marty (Kendra's dad) is helping with the driving. (pic#2)
I just received a phone call that "after replacing 2 truck tires, and 4 hours of hassles at the Haitian border, THEY HAVE JUST NOW MADE IT INTO HAITI at 3pm on Monday." (I guess there are 6 check points that kept closing to try to keep out commercial traffic) Please be in prayer for this team during the next ten days.
For those of you who contributed medicines & medical supplies, they are on the road in Haiti now. Thankfully Marty was able to get them through customs after some hassles. Thanks for your gifts & prayers!
The pictures below show the once 4-story FOHO (Friends of Haiti org) Guest house in PAP where three Free Methodist missionaries lost their lives in the earthquake. Merle West, Gene Defour, and Jeanne Acheson-Munos loved the Haitian people and gave their all in service to them.
Thanks to many kind donations to "NET Haiti Relief" Kendra is taking 140 plastic tarps to the families in the refugee camp that NET has adopted. We are continuing to investigate various tent options considering shipping, stability and size.
Samuel is heading back to PAP(a twelve hour trip one way) mid-week to make sure the "Renewable Haiti Water Project" is progressing as planned. They have found a good closer water source that is requiring less transportation cost. Please pray that the price that was negotiated for truck, driver, and diesel will be honored. Thanks to the generosity of so many of you, it seems that we can continue to provide water until the end of March to the refugee camps. We are looking into other water possibilities after that.
There are two people here in the DR that have been partners with Kendra and Samuel in all aspects of their Haiti relief ministry. This couple is Raul and Doris Perez/Fermin. I will have more details later about the many ways they have been a huge part of what Kendra & Samuel are doing in Haiti.
We want to thank, Linda Smith, for her record keeping of the "NET Haiti Relief" funds. A big thanks also goes to Linda Panchula from Davison FMC who keeps the records for the contributions for the "Haiti Water Project".
Marty (Kendra's dad) will be returning to the DR in a couple of days so I should have some up-to-date information at that time.
God bless you as you bless others! Cheryl Trepus (Kendra's mom)
If you would like to see more photos, Kendra has put two albums on her facebook.
