Contact: Stephen Box (323) 864-7586 BudgetLA meets on Saturday
"Neighborhood Councils Plan for the Future of LA!"
LOS ANGELES - Neighborhood Councils scored a reprieve this past
Tuesday as the CAO's recommendation to sweep all roll-over funds and to
cut NC operating budgets by 50% was sent to committee, giving the
community a week to work up a plan for saving the neighborhood council
system.
This Saturday, February 13, 2010, representatives from all over the
city will gather in Hollywood to hammer out a strategy for the
reorganization of the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, for
maintaining the NC funding at current levels, for forming a task force
to work with the City Council on the proposed changes, and for advising
the Mayor and the City Council on the city's budget and the delivery of
city services. It was newly minted Councilmember Paul Krekorian who moved
the CAO's recommendation out of City council and into his Education and Neighborhoods
Committee, a motion that had six seconds, demonstrating significant support
from around the horseshoe.
With the next E & N Committee meeting scheduled for
Tuesday, February 16, neighborhood councils have no time to waste and the
agenda for Saturday's BudgetLA is focused on developing a strategy to defeat
the CAO's recommendations for the NC system.
Julie Butcher, Regional Director for the SEIU, will
complement the focus on funding with her "Look for the Union Label"
presentation and discussion of the salaries of city staff, pension funding, and
opportunities for efficiencies and cost-cutting within the city structure.
