Accent Quarterly Newsletter - Summer 2010

Welcome to Accent Information Systems

Greetings!

We have some interesting news...Accent has lost a person...not literally, but figuratively.  Beginning in January, several Accent employees stepped up to the challenge to improve their health by joining "Accent's Biggest Loser" contest.  By June 30th, eleven challengers lost a combined weight of 152 pounds, or 6.69% overall.  With a small entrance fee from each contestant, a weekly weigh-in, a $1.00 penalty for each pound gained, and some seed money from Accent, the Biggest Loser contest pot grew to over $500.  Congratulations to our winner, Lois Heinlen, who lost a total of 16.37% of body weight, our second-place finisher, Curt Corwin (15.06% loss), and Adam Brinkman, our third-place finisher (13.81% loss). It was a close battle all the way to the final weigh-in. All participants are to be commended for their commitment to getting fit.

Just last week, a headline in the Dayton Daily News was "Ohio 13th fattest state; two-thirds of county overweight." The article states that it is estimated that 29% of adult Ohioans are obese.  Now is the time to make a similar challenge to your employees or co-workers.  Give them a reason to improve their health. It will pay off in the end. Who knows...it might also reduce sick days, improve employee productivity, and lower health insurance premiums.

With kindest regards,

Frank L. Goode, President
Accent Acquires Certain Assets from Newcome Electronics

In April of this year, Accent acquired the cabling and IP telephony business, along with selected assets from Newcome Electronic Systems headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. This transaction is an important part of Accent's aggressive growth strategy to expand its service capacity throughout Ohio.

"This partnership will allow clients of Newcome Electronic Systems to continue to enjoy the high level of service and support they've had over the past 30+ years", Tim Newcome of Newcome Electronics said. "I wanted to find a well-established, professional company that is committed to the community and Accent's reputation is second to none; I believe they will continue our legacy of first-class performance and leave our customers well served".

Businesses look for a partner that can provide the structured cabling solution that works along with the data network backbone and then delivers a solution to the desktop that fulfills customers' needs. Over the past 17 years Accent has helped many companies reach this goal.

Our two organizations have worked on some mutual accounts throughout the years, and with this acquistion, we will be adding some notable names to the Accent client list.

Accent will support all clients that use HP ProCurve data equipment, Proxim Broadband Wireless and ShoreTel IP telephone equipment. Newcome clients can continue to use the existing Newcome phone number and website.

Protecting Laptop Computers

So your organization has the newest software versions on its computers, a secure network, and firewall and virus protection is in place. You are now protected against cyber-threats, right?  Wrong.

With the increasing use of laptop computers, companies become extremely vulnerable when laptops are lost, stolen or broken into.  Companies should think beyond just the costs of the hardware and software (which are often insured against).  The cost of proprietary information, the potential for malicious use of information, the threat of network security breaches, and the future reputation of an organization must be considered, and plans must be made to prevent the loss of such investments.  But where does one start?

The SANS (SysAdmin, Audit, Network, Security) Institute, established in 1989, is a cooperative research and education organization. Its website, www.sans.org, provides a wealth of information regarding computer security.  Many no-cost resources are available, such as weekly news updates, security alerts, and a vast array of research papers.  We suggest reading a paper entitled "Protecting Laptop Computers", which can be found in the SANS "Reading Room".  It offers a logical approach to assessing your laptop risks, justifying the cost of security, and preventing vulnerabilities.  SANS also offers training, certification for those protecting your company's computers, a glossary of information security vocabulary, and even free security policy templates.

Your security measures shouldn't end with your laptops.  Read what Accent can do for your company's network security.

Technology Tip of the Quarter: Develop a Disaster Plan

With all the horrific news regarding the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, it's hard to ignore the importance of having a disaster plan.  We've all probably questioned BP's lack of such a plan.  But disaster plans aren't just for oil driller, or communities living in hurricane-prone areas or flood plains.  All businesses need a good disaster recovery plan.

The dependency on computer networks and electronic delivery systems increases the odds of everyday business being disrupted by failure of one of these core systems.  The development and implementation of a "Business Continuity Plan" will lower the potential costs of dealing with a disaster, and lower the time spent trying to get your business back on line.

A good Business Continuity Plan should start with these basic components:
  • A detailed description of business functions and operations for each department
  • Identification of other functions directly or indirectly impacted by failure of the main business functions
  • Identification of when the function loss would have the most impact
  • The time it would take the business to realize that the function had failed, both operationally and financially
  • The replacement equipment needed to recover from this function's loss, such as phones, PCs, software, and workstations
  • A list of alternate locations from which empoloyees can work (home, another arera of the facility, a datacenter facility, etc.).
Once these components are identified, the rest of the plan including different strategies can be developed.  Through discovery and analysis, Accent can help your team develop a detailed, step-by-step course of action for getting your business back on its feet quickly after a natural or man-made disaster.  Think of it as an information insurance policy - one that can save both time and money.  Contact us for more information.

We're Training for Pelotonia
2 bikers

Again this year, "Team Accent" will be taking part in Pelotonia, a grass roots effort to chase down cancer and defeat it.

This year's Pelotonia will take place August 20 - 22. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, one of only 40 centers in the United States designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center. The James is a national leader in creating and testing new therapies based on scientific research, many of which are offered nowhere else in the world.

Watch for more about this worthwhile event, or visit Pelotonia's website for more information, or to ride or volunteer.
