Statistically, men seek Chiropractic care half as often as women. But also statistically, men suffer from more episodes of low back pain than women. How does that compute? I wonder if the hero complex has something to do with it? Every hero from the theatre to our history books bravely suffers for the ones he loves, even to the death. Maybe stories like this have left an impression on men that suffering is brave and heroic. And that admitting pain is weak and wimpy. We are often unaware how this type of unconscious programming affects us. That may explain why so many men continue to suffer with back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain etc without seeking treatment. But the truth is that we want our men to live to their fullest potential not to suffer. We love those strong, heroic qualities but know they are best expressed without pain and injury.
This Father's Day, I'd like to make an effort to get more men under care. There is nothing romantic or heroic about continuing to suffer from any type of pain. Especially, when there is a compassionate team willing & able to help! So from now until June 19th let's get all the men in our lives to know that we want them to feel their best. And that it's time the hero makes an appointment to care for his spine! Until our next adjustment....

Low back pain & Chiropractic Care
Low back pain is a huge problem in our society. In fact one-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. Back pain can be devastating and has an affect on just about every aspect of peoples' lives. As chiropractors, we work to ensure that your spine functions properly. We are trained and highly effective at eliminating low back pain and preventing future occurence. It is worth noting that according to the 2009 Consumer Reports by the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center, "eighty-eight percent of those who tried chiropractic manipulation (adjustment) said "it helped a lot", making chiropractic care the highest ranked in terms of satisfaction.
Below, you will find some research showing the effectiveness of chiropractic for low back pain.
"Spinal manipulation [ADJUSTMENTS] provided better short and long-term functional improvement, and more pain relief in the follow-up than either back school or individual physiotherapy."
Cecchi F, et al. Spinal Manipulation Compared with Back School and with Individually Delivered Physiotherapy for the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Trial with One-year Follow-up. Clin Rehab 2010 (Jan); 24 (1): 26-36.
In fact, after an extensive study of all currently available care for low back problems, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research-a federal government research organization-recommended that low back pain sufferers choose the most conservative care first. And it recommended spinal manipulation as the only safe and effective, drugless form of initial professional treatment for acute low back problems in adults.6

"Chiropractic treatment was more effective than hospital outpatient management, mainly for patients with chronic or severe back pain. The benefit of chiropractic treatment became more evident throughout the follow up period. Secondary outcome measures also showed that chiropractic was more beneficial."

|Core Strength |
by Dr. Arin Broosan, D.C., C.S.C.S., C.K.T.P.
The core is a group of muscles that basically attach our upper body to our lower body. Our core muscles consist of abdominal, hip, pelvis, and back muscles and act to provide strength and stability to our spines. It is our foundation for movement.
Core stability is essential to having a healthy functioning spine and nervous system. It plays a major role in injury prevention, athletic performance, posture, and much more. The importance of core strength cannot be understated.
As Chiropractors our main priority is to remove subluxations (misaligned and/or fixated spinal segments). To have proper muscle motor control and coordination for optimal core functioning and stability, the brain and spinal cord must receive proper sensory/feedback signals from the spine. Having a subluxation disrupts this sensory signal. Having a weak core sets the stage for subluxation, repetitive injury and improper function. This is why training your core is crucial to maintaining a healthy spine and holding your adjustments.

| Core Stretch
by Dr. Heidi Fennell, D.C., FICPA
Lower back pain affects 80 percent of Americans. It is the most common reason for missed work and the overuse of pain meds. Why is low back pain so prevalent? The answer lies simply in our most common activity of daily living: sitting. In America, we sit while we eat, while we work, in our cars in traffic, while we watch our favorite TV show and so on. Most of us sit more than we do any other activity.
All of this sitting weakens our core and tightens our hip flexors, the muscles that connect our femur to our lower lumbar vertebrae and are responsible for hip flexion. While sitting, the hip flexors are in constant contraction and over time, this constant contraction leads to improper biomechanics of the lumbar spine and hip joints which results in pain. Chiropractic adjustments are extremely helpful in correcting the biomechanical issues caused by this problem and alleviating the pain. But in order to keep the alignment holding strong and prevent future episodes of pain, patients must stretch the hip flexors (most notably the Psoas muscle), with a stretch known at the "Runners Stretch".
How to do the "Runners Stretch":
Kneel on the right knee with the left foot planted in front of you. Now pull your belly button to your spine (very important) and lean into the left foot until you feel a stretch on the front of the right hip. For added stretch, maintain the belly button pulled in and reach your right arm overhead. Hold stretch for 6 deep breathes and repeat on other side.
Do this stretch daily as part of your morning or evening stretching routine and begin to watch low back tension lessen over time.
The importance of protein
Protein is a "building block" nutrient. Your body uses protein to build tissue, such as white and red blood cells in addition to other cells in the immune system, skin, hair and muscle.
Men generally need a little more protein each day than women. To maintain muscle, the body needs protein. Men usually have more muscle mass; therefore, they need more protein. Considering the example above, a 200 pound man should aim for the top of the protein range or about 100 grams of protein per day.
Here are some healthy sources of protein to incorporate into your diet:
- White meat poultry
- Lean beef
- Milk, cheese & yogurt
- Protein-on-the-go: meal replacement drink or protein bar

by Thomas M.
"I've had upper back/neck pain problems for years, as you likely do as well if you've also been mainly a computer focused employee and have a stressful job. My girlfriend arranged my initial appointment with Dr. Heidi. I was skeptical but went anyway. And WOW! I've had two adjustments and two massages and feel 100% better than I did a week ago. I'm completely sold. Dr. Heidi was spot on with all my aches, even knew that I had a much more stressful week than normal when I saw her today, psychic almost. I've signed on for two visits a week for at least the next month and don't expect to stop after that, my neck hasn't felt this good in at least five years.
If you're looking for a chiropractor in the area, sign up here, you won't regret it. Not just chiropractic, it's an entire wellness center with everything else you might need on site. The massage is awesome, Victoria is a hero and does great work too.
Bonus - five minutes from my office and they take my insurance, after the deductible the visits cost almost nothing for both adjustment and massage. The online reservation and appointment reminder system is also very cool."
