July 2010

Greetings!

dr heidi
If there was a pill that had even half of the benefits as movement, everyone would be taking that pill and paying lots of money for it.  Moving your body has documented benefits for almost every ailment known to man.  It makes you feel better by bringing oxygen to the cells and lubrication to the joints.  It makes you look better by improving muscle tone and posture.  It even makes you smile more by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.  We are mostly familiar with active forms of movement like hiking, yoga & weight lifting but most people don't know that passive forms of movement are just as important to your health.

Chiropractic Treatments and Massage are two of the most widely used forms of passive movement.  These treatment modalities restore normal movement to injured, fixated joints and tight, painful muscles both if not corrected, create pain & decreased health.

Movement is a required nutrient that we just aren't getting enough of.  So if you can make it a goal to move more than you sit each day through both passive and active forms of movement, you'll be on your way to wellness.
  Until our next adjustment...

Yours in health,

from our Clinical Nutritionist Michelle

Diet and exercise go hand in hand when it come to overall health. It's important to have balanced meals for sustained energy in our daily lives, especially when doing prolonged or strenuous exercise. One vital component a balanced meal is PROTEIN. Most people think of meat, poultry or fish in this category, however there are many sources in both the animal and plant world that give us this macro nutrient. Take note that many vegetarian sources have insufficient levels of essential amino acids (the building blocks of protein that we need to get from our food) therefore it is wise to practice protein complementing.

This means consuming another food that has high levels of amino acids that the other food lacked, such as beans and rice, toast with peanut butter, or a cheese sandwich and granola with milk or soy milk. A fantastic vegan source is hemp which is packed with Omegas too! Here's a great recipe if you are vegetarian or just looking to switch up burger night.

Lentil Burgers

Prep Time:             10 minutes

Cooking Time:        1 hour

Yields:                   8 servings

Ingredients:

3 cups water

2 cups lentils

1 medium onion, chopped

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped

2 tablespoons tamari soy sauce

1 tablespoon umeboshi vinegar  (you can substitute apple cider vinegar)

Directions:

1. Boil water.

2. Add lentils, reduce heat to simmer and cook uncovered for about 40 minutes until lentils become soft and lose their shape.

3. While lentils are cooking, sauté onion and garlic in olive oil for about 10 minutes.

4. Add garlic and continue sautéing another 5 minutes.

5. Remove from heat and set aside with remaining ingredients.

6. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

7. When the lentils are finished, transfer to large mixing bowl and cool in freezer for  about 10 minutes.  Remove from freezer and add all other ingredients and mix well.

8. Form into patties, 4 inches in diameter and ¾-inch thick.

9. Place patties on a lightly oiled cookie sheet and cook 10-15 minutes in the oven.

I recommend serving these on an ezekiel bread or sprouted grain bun for even more protein and fiber. Add a small salad with dark leafy greens and you're all set!

Enjoy!

Client Testimonial

"I should have found Dr. Heidi years ago! I was always under the impression that chiropractors were rough, and that kept me away for years. After complaining to a friend about soreness in my shoulders, my friend recommended that I go see Dr. Heidi. At that point, I was ready to do anything.

Wow, Dr. Heidi turned out to be so gentle, and so knowledgeable about the body. The massage therapists are great too, with Dr. Heidi's adjustments, and a few massages that worked out knots in my muscles, I feel like a new person.

One of Dr.Heidi's specialties is working with pregnant mothers, and although I'm not pregnant, my girlfriend is, and she says the comfort that Dr.Heidi brings through her adjustments is like heaven, so tell your pregnant friends.

I was happily surprised to learn that my insurance covered some of my visits, so be sure to have them check your coverage with your health plan.  The on-site parking is very convenient."
