Greetings!

To all the new members this year, welcome to our CSA!
There are still about 12 openings left, if you have anyone that would like to join please let them know quickly.

We are looking forward to growing on the new Wason Road land in Chester. Spring Hill Farm consists of almost 600 acres of land including her home and barns. It was a gift to the town of Chester by schoolteacher Muriel Church in 1995. She operated a working farm there for over 4 generations and wanted the farm to remain an agricultural resource for the community, we are glad to be able to help that continue as a reality.

New greenhouse coverings have been put on and it is like flying a kite with even the slightest breeze to do that. Installing the 1800 square foot covering takes 6-8 people to pull it up and over the structure. It went smoothly this year as we never had a serious gust of wind try to "take us away".

Our greenhouses are all cold frames which means they use no fossil fuels to heat them.
 Speaking of Seeds

We buy our seeds from several sources that have certified organic vegetable, herb, fruit, and flower seeds available.

The bulk of our seeds come from High Mowing Organic Seeds in Vermont. We also purchase what we'll sow from Seeds of Change Certified Organic, Johnny's Selected Seeds, Ferry-Morse Seed Company and New England Seed.

But what did people do before there were seed companies? Seeds were saved, passed down, bought, traded, and sold amongst people who depended upon them.

Many of the heirloom varieties were named after the person who first shared them, or their place of origin. We especially love these edible heirlooms because of their genetic purity, their beauty, and their indescribable taste.

Last year we began seriously savings seeds, and we'll be expanding our heirloom seed collection throughout the 2009 growing season. This year, we hope you'll really enjoy some of our newest heirloom offerings. Ronde de Nice Zucchini Squash will appear in the CSA shares. They're round, and from the south of France.

Please let us know what you think of these time honored treasures we're growing for you once you've had a chance to try them!

  Preparing...
In the greenhouse we have Cilantro, Basil, Cherry Tomatos, Pastel Zinnia, Sunflowers, and more for the pick your own area.

April 18th I'll be at the Raymond Earth Day event, Rverside Park Raymond 10-3, rain location at the  Lamprey River Elementary School. Thanks for the invite Susan!
