United Through Reading

to Sharpen its Focus on Military Program

As a result of recent strategic planning and analysis by its board of trustees, United Through Reading is sharpening its mission and moving forward with plans for the nonprofit organization to focus solely on its highly successful military program.

"Concentrating our resources on our military program will allow United Through Reading to fully direct our personnel and funding toward this rewarding program that has been so well received to date," said Sally Ann Zoll, Ed.D., Chief Executive Officer of United Through Reading. "By choosing to narrow our focus on the program with the most growth and success, we will regrettably no longer offer our programs for grandparents and those in transition from incarceration to re-entry."

The United Through Reading military program provides deployed service members the opportunity to make powerful and lasting connections with their children by offering them the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children at home. Since its inception in 1990, the United Through Reading military program has served more than one million beneficiaries.

The San Diego-based nonprofit Reading Legacies will be assuming operations of the Transitions Program.

BAE Systems' Employees Donate $51,000

to United Through Reading

In June, BAE Systems' employees and other friends of United Through Reading throughout the country donated money to purchase books at First Book which will be sent to deployed parents to read to their children while being recorded on video.

For every $10 BAE Systems' employees donated, United Through Reading can purchase five books to send to troops at military commands abroad. More than 1,000 employees contributed.

"We are thrilled at the success of this giving campaign," said Doug Stewart, BAE Systems Vice President for Government Relations and a United Through Reading board member. "Our employees believe it's critical to keep emotional ties within military families strong and to support U.S. troops in any way we can. Our employees' giving showed the depth of that belief."

Other friends of United Through Reading including a submarine wives book club, our own volunteers, and at least one bestselling author were inspired to contribute as well.
