Industry News | Old wood commands premium prices
Vancouver Sun - Sept 30, 2012
Demand for reclaimed materials up as buyers seek out beams with character.
There's a lot of spilled beer and good memories on the back of a flat-deck truck at Western Reclaimed Timber's property beside the Fraser River in Maple Ridge.
Stacked on the truck is about 2,000 board feet of laminated structural beams - known as "glulams," layers of woods bonded together - removed during construction work at the Fraser Arms Hotel on South West Marine Drive in Vancouver.
"They're excellent," allows Western owner Bruce MacDonald, who's been in the wood-recycling business for 25 years. "Nothing wrong with them at all."
Crews remove nails from the beams and use metal detectors to probe for potentially dangerous metal bits not visible to the naked eye. The beams will be visually graded according to knots and cracks, then milled into a variety of wood products that could include tongue-and-groove flooring, timber frames, table and counter tops, decking for boats, and wraps for steel beams.
The wood may be old - made from ancient Douglas felled around the 1950s - but in today's wood-construction market, old has never seemed newer. "The old look is in," MacDonald confirms. "It's highly sought after." The human history of the wood also adds value to the product.
Some of the more recognizable structures from which Western has reclaimed wood include the Woodward's Building and Drake Hotel in Vancouver, and the historic Glenrose Cannery on the Fraser River in North Delta, which was dismantled due to construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road.
"People are often more interested in the story behind the wood than the wood itself," MacDonald notes. Click here to read the entire article |
Industry News | New U.S. housing fires up B.C. lumber sector
Globe and Mail - September 30, 2012 British Columbia's softwood lumber industry is finally on the comeback trail, fuelled by a recovery in U.S. housing starts and steady demand from China. "The outlook for the softwood sector in general is quite positive over the next few years as we go through a growth cycle," said David Elstone, a senior analyst with ERA Forest Products Research. He is predicting U.S. housing starts of 835,000 in 2013 and 950,000 in 2014, up from an industry forecast of 746,000 this year. "We're rising out of a trough in U.S. housing starts," said Mr. Elstone, who noted that Vancouver-based lumber producers such as Canfor Corp., West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. and Conifex Timber Inc. will be among the beneficiaries of the market's rebound. With softwood lumber prices strengthening in 2012, producers are expected to report healthy third-quarter financial results. The Random Lengths framing lumber composite price, which is closely watched by the forestry industry, averaged $264 (U.S.) for 1,000 board feet earlier this year, but surged 27 per cent since then to surpass $336 in September. A seasonal slowdown is inevitable as colder weather reduces demand for lumber at construction sites, but prices are forecast to stay robust, compared with last year's fourth quarter. While much of the focus in 2012 has been on the U.S. housing market being on the mend, the trend of strong demand from China in recent years is expected to continue. Industry News | World's tallest timber building 'tops out' in Melbourne
Architecture & Design - September 6, 2012 The world's tallest residential timber building has topped out in Melbourne, builders lifting the last timber panel to complete the structure.
Taking shape near the water's edge in Melbourne's Victoria Harbour, Fort is being built with Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) which has a structural strength akin to the traditionally used concrete and steel. (Read an in-depth report in Building Products News here).
While CLT has been popular in Europe for more than a decade, developers Lend Lease point out that Fort will be the first residential development in Australia in CLT. The 32-metre building, which rises over 10 storeys, is due to be completed in October this year.
Managing director of Lend Lease's project management and construction business in Australia, Murray Coleman commented on the environmental benefits of using timber. "Concrete and steel buildings are carbon intensive but timber, as well as being renewable, has the advantage of storing carbon.Timbers used are also sourced from certified sustainably managed forests. "With the structure being built entirely from CLT, Fort will reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by more than 1,400 tonnes when compared to concrete and steel - the equivalent of removing 345 cars from our roads. Industry News - CAWP Update
| Holzbau European Wood Building Technical Tour and Conference - December 2012
On the first weekend of December, a group of architects, builders and wood products manufacturers will board flights for Zurich. The participants will spend the next three days traveling through some of the most picturesque parts of Switzerland, Austria, and southern Germany, with their ultimate destination being Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a small city located at the foot of Germany's highest mountain, Zugspitze. The city hosted the 1936 Winter Olympics and is well-known both as a health spa and a premier winter sports destination. The group's interest in the town however is somewhat different - every year the venue plays host to the Holzbau Forum, Europe's largest international conference on wood building and design.
The Holzbau conference alone is sufficient reason to make the trip to Germany. Spanning three days, the event consistently attracts around 1,200 participants for presentations and discussions on emerging building technologies and best practices case studies. Always prominent on the agenda during the event is discussion of green building technologies and energy-efficient structures, driven by the stringent environmental legislation prevalent throughout the EU. The event is an excellent way for North Americans to gain insight into processes and technologies that are influencing building codes and design trends back here in Canada. (An English-language PDF of the conference program can be downloaded by visiting http://www.forum-holzbau.com/ihf/garmisch_index.html and clicking on the British flag icon).
During the three days before their arrival in Garmisch, the group visits innovative production plants and exemplary timber architectural structures. This year's tour will visit innovative building products companies such as Schilliger Holz, Blumer & Lehmann, Lignatur and Baufritz, as well as landmark timber structures such as Shigeru Ban's Tamedia Office Building in Zurich and the 8-storey Life Cycle Tower in Dornbirn, Austria.
After the Holzbau conference, the group will travel to Munich, where they will have the option to visit a permanent exhibition of 55 homes that showcase different construction methods. A trip to Munich would not be complete without a visit to one of the city's famous beer halls. This recreational component will round out the tour on the night prior to the group's return trip to Canada.
Researchers at UBC initiated the Wood Construction and Design Tour back in 2001, and it has grown in popularity with each successive offering. A maximum participation limit of 20 people will be imposed this year to allow plant tours to be kept to a manageable size. The cost of hotels, transportation and the conference (including meals at the conference) are normally approximately $2,600, depending on the size of the group. Participants make their own flight arrangements and pay for their own meals during the pre-conference tour. If you are interested in taking part in the 2012 event, we recommend that you contact CAWP early at cawp@cawp.ubc.ca

Specifiers Program Update
|
Roy Manion
The past couple of weeks have been quite busy for yours truly. In between organizing a couple of seminars and conducting Lunch & Learn sessions, I had the pleasure of attending 3 major events. The first event was the AWMAC Awards of Excellence 2012 held appropriately in the West Wing of the Vancouver Convention Centre. This awards ceremony honours those involved in the design, manufacture, and supply of architectural woodwork in a variety of categories. This was the first time I had attended this ceremony and one could not help but be impressed with the skill and abilities of those who had been selected for these awards. While viewing the great works that were presented throughout the evening, I couldn't help but think that all these projects required product, much of which we either are already producing or are able to do so. We will definitely explore how BC Wood can play a greater role in this area on behalf of BC's value-added wood industry. To see more about the AWMAC Awards program, click here This past Friday and Saturday, we worked the BC Wood booth at the IDSwest show. I always find these types of shows a wonderful experience as it gives us a great opportunity to get our message out to those who specify products (in this case, primarily designers and architects) and the general public who are interested sufficiently to attend the show. Equally important is that this particular show also provides the opportunity to visit and connect with many manufacturers of great value-added wood products - furniture, flooring, panelling, millwork, and the like. The BC Wood "pavilion" consisted of several companies in our industry who took advantage of BC Wood's cost sharing to exhibit their products. All in all, I believe everyone had an excellent show and should benefit significantly from it. On Sunday, I was presented with the opportunity to attend the dedication of St. Mathew Elementary School in Surrey as a guest of the designing architects Daniel Kim and Ian Tingley of Pacific Rim Architecture Ltd. The construction of the school had just been completed and its first classes were held at the beginning of this new school year. The school features many wood elements including exposed glulam beams, roof decking, and wood panelling in the gym and in a gathering area. The classroom doors are made of natural birch which because of natural birch's grain variations, allowed each classroom door to be unique. Also, all cabinetry is made of birch. All wood elements are clear finished to highlight both the wood's grain characteristics and warm colors. The wood gives the school an incredibly warm and calming feeling, a great environment for learning. Interestingly enough, St. Mathew's is an independent school and, therefore, not governed by the Wood First Act which requires wood elements to be used in all publicly funded buildings. However, the architect, Daniel Kim, has been to several BC Wood events which he advises influenced his decision to incorporate so much wood into the design. As Daniel told me at the dedication, he was originally planning on constructing the school with bricks, concrete, steel, and drywall and was in the middle of the school's designing stage when he attended the Architect Program at GBM in 2008. He was so taken by how wood could be used that he made the decision right there and then to incorporate wood into the school's design and one that he obviously carried out. This is a great example of the importance of our ongoing programs to work with those in the specifier community. On a personal note, two of my grandsons attend this school so I am doubly pleased with how this has all worked out for not only do they have dedicated teachers to teach them, but also a great environment in which to learn. |
2012 Global Buyers Mission (GBM) Report | Randi Walker
The 2012 Global Buyers Mission, held September 6th -8th welcomed over 700 delegates to Whistler, surpassing the attendance of our past 8 years. Many thanks must go to our funding Partners this year including our Platinum Partners: Natural Resources Canada Wood Export Program (CWEP) and Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd. (FII); our Silver Partners: Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and Western Economic Diversification (WD); and our Bronze Partners: the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), HSBC and BC Hydro. Our Corporate sponsors this year included The Teal Jones Group, the Waldun Group, BFL Insurance and BDO. Pre-qualified international buyers came from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Eastern Canada, China, India, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Pakistan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Vietnam, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. We were pleased that the majority of our buyers were new to the GBM again this year, offering excellent opportunities for Canadian manufacturers to build new business. We also hosted over 90 North American architects, designers, contractors, developers, engineers and specifiers this year, to participate in our Wood First and ReThink Wood Programs, held on Thursday, September 8th and via the Wood First display on the showroom floor for the rest of the event. Architects & Designers also participated in "speed learning sessions" Friday afternoon, with 20 manufacturers exhibiting at the GBM. This was our second year of delivering this activity and it once again received high marks from both the architect community and participating exhibitors. Products on display at the 2012 GBM included timber frame structures, engineered wood products, treated lumber, stair systems, windows & doors, mouldings, cabinetry, building systems, flooring, western red cedar products and a variety of other value-added wood building products. 26% of the companies were new to the GBM, offering our returning buyers some additional resources and products not seen at the GBM in the past. Exhibitors have reported a record breaking $55+ million in estimated sales from business generated at the GBM this year. For the past eight years, BC Wood has organized pre and post event site visits and tours for our incoming delegates. This year, the GBM Extended Mission Program included 8 groups that once again toured production facilities and visited construction sites in the lower mainland and Northern BC to meet manufacturers. Besides helping buyers immediately source high quality, innovative and competitively priced wood products, the tours helped build future business relationships by familiarizing potential customers with BC's wood species. We thank the many local companies that made the effort to open their mills and plants for these informative and productive tours. Held at the Whistler Conference Centre, the GBM continues to be Canada's largest event dedicated to promoting value-added wood producers. Next GBM scheduled for Whistler, September 5th to 7th, 2013 |
BC Wood at this year's BAU Show - Munich, Germany, January 14-19th, 2012 |
Brian Hawrysh
BAU is the largest and best known building products show in the European market. The BAU fair, held every two years, attracts over 200,000 attendees. Some 40,000 of these attendees come from neighboring Western European countries, the ex-Soviet Bloc countries, and the Middle East. A unique feature of the BAU show is that it consolidates companies featuring wood products and wood building systems in one of its sixteen halls. So while the show is very large, the majority of potential customers for wood based products and building systems are concentrated in one area.
Throughout Western Europe and particularly in resort regions that have a high percentage of second luxury homes (such as the Alps in France, Germany, and Italy and the Pyrenees region of Spain and France), there exists good potential for manufacturers of log and timber frame homes. The BC handcrafted style, featuring large diameter logs and heavy timbers, have a unique appeal to these wealthy homeowners. High quality, specialty lumber and building materials such as WRC decking, siding, and roofing and Douglas-Fir, Hemlock, and Western Hardwood lumber remain in demand in Western Europe and increasingly in the emerging markets of the Eastern post-Soviet bloc countries. In January 2012, BC Wood will organize a display of member companies and other Canadian forest products associations. Space is limited,so for more information regarding the BAU show, BC Wood's participation, and costs, please contact Brian Hawrysh at 604-882-7100 or directly at bhawrysh@bcwood.com.

China International Exhibition on the Housing Industry - Nov 21 - 23, 2012
|
Jim Ivanoff
All of the companies who just exhibited at the 2012 Global Buyers Mission were able to experience the level of enthusiasm Chinese buyers have for Canadian wood products. BC Wood is now organizing another opportunity for members to target the Chinese market through the China International Exhibition on the Housing Industry (CIEHI).
Last September, BC Wood participated for the first time in the CIEHI. The show was very well attended and the participating companies reported some very good leads from Chinese builders, developers, and architects. A main theme of the show was green and energy efficient building with wood construction and building products featured prominently throughout the show. A number of foreign log-home and panelized house manufacturers were promoting their products, in particular a large number of Russian log home builders. To maximize profile and traffic, BC Wood located its' display area within the Canada Wood booth partnering with the Coast Forest Products Association and Council of Forest Industries.
BC Wood will be returning to the CIEHI show in Beijing this coming November 21st - 23rd. From our previous experience at this show, we expect that the best opportunities for new contacts and increased exposure in the marketplace will be achieved by manufacturers of prefabricated homes, log and timber frame structures, engineered wood products, WRC lumber decking and siding, and construction lumber.
For more information or to register, please contact Jim Ivanoff at ivanoff@canadawood.jp.

US Market Update

Dave Farley
A few comments, suggestions, and ideas that may be of interest to Industry...
A while back, I wrote about potential opportunities for wood products in the booming energy sector of North Dakota. This part of the world is in desperate need of residential housing to meet the demand from workers moving to the region to find high paying jobs in the oil and gas industry. While opportunity exists in the residential market, there is also good potential in the commercial and industrial sectors as well.
As discussed, the epicenter of the gas boom is found in the northwest corner of the State sandwiched between the State of Montana and the province of Saskatchewan. The cities of Williston and Minot are the two major population centers in the region and city officials estimate that there is an immediate need of 3,500 homes, 1,200 apartments, and 2,000 hotel rooms to handle the 30,000 plus workers who have recently migrated to the area.
In the dustbowl city of Williston, I counted eight new hotel projects that were currently under construction (image above). In the larger city of Minot, six hotels are under construction with another fifteen proposed. These projects are usually five to six story wood frame buildings consisting of between 80 to 100 rooms, many designed with kitchenettes. If you are familiar with the 'Holiday Inn Express' hotels, then you have a fairly good idea of what these hotels look like. As with the residential sector, most of the hotels and extended stay apartments are being built by developers from outside of the State. It is common to see licence plates from Minnesota, California, and Nevada on the trucks and trailers circling the projects. In discussion with builders, there is a need for quality lumber, heavy timbers, prebuilt panels, and other construction products if the costs are in line with what they are currently paying. Also, there is a need for cabinetry, millwork, and other finished products on these projects. Members including Woodtone have had some success supplying materials on these projects.
Other industrial applications for wood products in this region include the supply of heavy timber for shoring and industrial mats. One company that I visited, Quality Mat Company, is doing significant business in the oil patch. They manufacture and supply wood industrial mats, used to reinforce the ground in and around gas wells and pipelines where heavy equipment tears the ground up after rains and adverse weather. Quality Mat uses primarily hardwood species including Oak and Hickory in the production of their mats; however, they are limited to a maximum length of 16 ft. In discussions with the production manager, Douglas Fir could be used to supply mats in longer lengths where they are currently using steel. At their site just outside Minot, Quality Mat has over 5,000 heavy timber mats in stock and according to the site manager, business is very good.
Other potential industrial applications include heavy timber used to shore up drill sites and the use of Cross Laminated Timbers (CLT) in the manufacture of onsite industrial warehousing, water storage, and fracking tanks.
We are currently exploring the potential of organizing a trade event in the North Dakota region for member companies to take advantage of the potential in the oil and gas sectors. If you are interested or for more information on this market or any other market in the US, please contact me at dfarley@bcwood.com.

Japan Market Update: BC Wood Member Products in High-end Department Store
|
Jim Ivanoff
For the past several years, BC Wood has been promoting design related products in Japan, such as furniture and millwork. We have been successful in having these products specified into several high-profile projects. Recently, even one of Japan's top department stores came to us as they were interested in using some pieces in a display.
Isetan's flagship Shinjuku store attracts wealthy, fashion conscious shoppers from across Kanto. The Canadian Embassy in Tokyo has worked with them to promote Canadian apparel and recommended BC Wood when Isetan was looking to create a stylish, 'woody' atmosphere to launch a new line of clothing.
We introduced them to a variety of furniture pieces as well as millwork options, but the store's designers knew they had found exactly what they were looking for once they saw Brent Comber's work and the WRCLA published Cedar Book. Using selected pieces from Brent as well as a selection of WRC products, Isetan was able to create a sophisticated yet 'woody' display. The store felt that their customers really enjoyed the warmth of the Canadian wood products. Hopefully this will encourage some of their clients to consider using Canadian materials for their own homes in the near future.
As always, BC Wood greatly appreciates all of the support given to us by the Canadian Embassy. We look forward to more such collaborative efforts in the future.
