Smith Hill Community Development Corporation

Greetings from Smith Hill CDC!

We would like to share some of the amazing things going on in our neighborhood this summer.

In terms of our foreclosed property development, the first Visions II

home, 5-7 Osborn, is now complete and rented, the huge Camden Ave. retaining wall is under construction and over 26 homes are in some state of redevelopment in the neighborhood.  If you haven't had a chance, we invite you to take a drive around the neighborhood between Smith St. and Douglas Ave.  The amount of construction is unprecedented in SH!

Mayor Tavares was our special guest at the Statewide Affordable Housing Open House, on Saturday, June 11th.  The Mayor toured Capital Square and 42 Violet St. and spoke about the importance of affordable housing to our city.

Our website, www.smithhillcdc.org, has had a facelift!  The site has been retooled so that it is easier to find important information, see pictures of our rehab projects or just explore. If you are new to our organization or the

Smith Hill Newsletter, you can catch up with our past on-line letters here.

Find us on Facebook The Smith Hill Community has a great new resident-driven FaceBook page.  Hit "like" to stay informed and share with other neighborhood residents!  We are up to 34 "friends," and want to get to 100 by September.  Please check it out!

Community News & Events

 Farmers Market

Our friends at Elmhurst Clean & Green are once again sponsoring a Farmers Market.  This year it is located at Fargnoli Park, which is on Smith St. near La Salle Bakery.

Farmers market

The market runs each Sunday from 11 am - 2 pm until late October

There are many other attractions at the market as well, like kids activities & informational booths.  It is a real destination!

WIC, EBT, SNAP and Senior Coupon are accepted.

YouthRAP Summer Employment

Be on the lookout for our summer workers!  The YouthRAP Summer Employment program is in full swing and you can see them all over the neighborhood in their bright green shirts doing community service activities. In fact, last week Channel 12 stopped by and interviewed a few workers as they were working along Douglas Ave. The spot should be aired soon.

Summer employment responsibilities include working on community beautification projects; attending Job Skills and Nonviolence Trainings; supervising the younger YouthRAP participants on bi-weekly trips to the beach; and working with the Roger Williams National Memorial Park staff in researching the history of the park and Smith Hill.  This project is especially interesting as the youth will work with an Oral History Specialist to develop individualized personal, oral histories, and in guiding park visitors on walking tours throughout the month of August.  Great stuff!

Sunday ProJo Article

Smith Hill was the Neighborhood of the Week in April 10th's

Providence Sunday Journal, Home Section in an article entitled, "Smith Hill Revival."

Our extensive development work was featured, particularly our Visions II project.  It was a positive article and we are pleased to present our neighborhood from this perspective, because far too often urban neighborhoods are only portrayed negatively in the media.

Here is the Projo article

.

HousEART

HouseART began as a Smith Hill CDC initiative that connected artists with neighborhood residents in order to create temporary works of art on vacant housing.  Since 2009, local artist and activist, Lydia Stein, has taken the initiative city-wide and we are proud to announce that Rhode Island State Council of the Arts (RISCA) has just award Ms. Stein a grant to take HousEART across the entire state! There is currently a Call to Artists for ten more projects, which even includes a stipend!  Click here for more information.

Recently, HouseART was featured on a national housing website, Leader for Communities, and HousingWorks RI's, Special Report on Foreclosures in Rhode Island.

Leaders for Communities is a social networking site that connects current and future leaders at community development organizations across the country.  NeighborWorks America® developed the Leaders for Communities website in 2009 to give new, emerging, and experienced leaders in the community development field an opportunity to share ideas and experiences and access professional development and career opportunities.  SHCDC is proud to be featured on this NeighborWorks America® site, especially as a non-affiliated organization.  Click here to read the excellent article.

The recent HousingWorks RI special report includes pictures of two HouEART projects on the cover, an article about the project inside and a sidebar article about Visions II!  Check it out here.

Visions II

5-7 Osborn St.
5-7 Osborn, Visions II
We are so pleased to announce the delivery of our first Visions II project, 5-7 Osborn St!

Visions II is our current 52 unit tax credit project, the largest project of its kind currently underway in Rhode Island!  All the houses in Visions II will be completely "gutted" inside and out and will feature a new roof, new exterior cement-board siding, new electric, plumbing, etc...  These houses will all remain affordable rentals for at least 45 years, so they are certainly being re-built to last!

We are currently taking applications for these new rental units.  If you are interested, please click on the about link where you can also see many "in progress" picture of this exciting project.

Smith Hill CDC is working on several rehabilitation projects aimed at affordable home ownership in the neighborhood.  Two projects are listed below and we have several more in various stages of development.

42 Violet, Complete

42 Violet St.

Rehabilitation of 42 Violet St. is complete and it is on the market!  This home is a large one-bedroom, one bath, cottage with laundry hook-ups in the second floor bathroom and a large eat-in kitchen.  There is also a nice backyard with plenty of space.    Asking price in only  $68,000!
Please see this link for sales information.

Capitol Square at Smith Hill

Our Capitol Square condominium units are back on the market at reduced prices.  There are nine more of these three-bedroom homes available.  For more information, please click here.  Also, stay tuned for some  exciting news about our commercial spaces in the next newsletter!

93 Goddard and 63 Candace

The 963 Project consists of two multi-family houses that are being rehabilitated for home ownership.  Each house will have a two-story, four bedroom townhouse apartment on the second and third floors and a two-bedroom rental on the first.  This design allows the homeowner to increase the family's income through the rental unit.  With an asking price of approximately $135,000, these two houses are very attractive purchases in any market.  Click here for more details.

Library News
Library Sigh

Smith Hill Library and the PCL

In June, Mayor Tavares helped negotiate a six month extension on the leases of seven of the library buildings which make up the Providence Community Library system.  The former management, PPL, had threatened to close the buildings at the end of the then-current lease.  The Mayor stated that the objective of the extension is to allow time to find a permanent, sustainable solution to the ownership issue.  Please let your local politicians know how important the library is to our neighborhood.

With other municipalities closing their libraries, Providence stands as a testimony to what great things can be accomplished with strong grass-roots support, dedicated board leadership, a strong, patient administration and staff, and a unified, cooperative union.

The Providence Community Libraries (all the neighborhood libraries except Central) are in the second year of new management under the PCL. The new organization is community-based and a truly democratic institution.
