There are two community clean-ups scheduled for this weekend.

Mulch Madness
This weekend, we will be going throughout the neighborhood mulching all of the street trees, so as to help them thrive and make Smith Hill a better place to live. This is a family initiative; we will be volunteering in teams if we have enough people sign up.
Day 1: SATURDAY, April 16th - Time: 10:30-12:30pm
Day 2: SUNDAY, April 17th Time: 10:30-12:30pm
On both days, we will meet at 120 Calverly St, in front of Basement Brewhaus. We will have some equipment, but please bring a shovel, gardening gloves or a rake, if possible. If you plan to come on Sunday, please be sure to RSVP.
Please RSVP in any event, so we can estimate our scope of work and get as much done as possible!.
Mulch Madness is an initiative of the State House Neighborhood Association and the Smith Hill Community Development Corporation
Library Clean Up & Bake/Book Sale
The Friends of Smith Hill Library are sponsoring a Bake/Book Sale and a Community Clean-Up on:
Saturday, April 9th from 10-2, Smith Hill Library, 30 Candace St.
Come out and support the Library, help spruce things up, eat some sweets and read a book! It's a little something for everyone.
Sunday ProJo Article
Smith Hill was the Neighborhood of the Week in last Sunday's Providence Journal, Home Section, in an article entitled, "Smith Hill Revival." Our extensive development work was featured, particularly our Visions II project. It was a positive article and we are pleased to present our neighborhood from this perspective, because far too often urban neighborhoods are only portrayed negatively in the media.
There are many people and organizations working hard to not only sustain our neighborhood in this continuing economic slump, but to actually improve things. We are hoping to build upon the foundations of our residential work with these partnerships, which while not always highly visible, are strong and effective.
Specifically, we would like to mention The State House Neighborhood Association, Elmhurst Clean& Green, The Smith Hill Library Friends Group, Providence College, The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, the Providence Parks and Recreation Department, the Providence Police Department and Ward 12 Councilman, Terrence Hassett, (Councilman, we are all happy to have you back!) We welcome all constructive voices and encourage everyone to get involved. Here is the Projo article.
HousEART HouseART started as a Smith Hill CDC initiative that connected artists with neighborhood residents in order to create temporary works of art on vacant housing. Since 2009, local artist and activist, Lydia Stein, has taken the initiative city-wide and she may even expand it regionally this summer.
Recently, HouseART was featured on a national housing website, Leader for Communities, and HousingWorks RI's, Special Report on Foreclosures in Rhode Island.
Leaders for Communities is a social networking site that connects current and future leaders at community development organizations across the country. NeighborWorks America® developed the Leaders for Communities website in 2009 to give new, emerging, and experienced leaders in the community development field an opportunity to share ideas and experiences and access professional development and career opportunities. SHCDC is proud to be featured on this NeighborWorks America® site, especially as a non-affiliated organization. Click here to read the excellent article.
The recent HousingWorks RI special report includes pictures of two HouEART projects on the cover, an article about the project inside and a sidebar article about Visions II! Check it out here.
