The Davis Park Playground Grand Opening

 Tuesday, July 28th at 5:00

There will be light refreshments and activities for kids.

Playground Build
Playground Volunteers

On Saturday, June 27 ,over 350 volunteers participated on a playground build at Davis Park.  That group included 185 volunteers from the Smith Hill, Mt. Pleasant and Elmhurst neighborhoods alone!  The work was made possible through a KaBOOM! grant that matched corporate sponsor, MetLife, with Smith Hill CDC, Elmhurst Clean & Green and the Providence Parks Department.  The playground is the latest stage of the Davis Park Renovation.  The build also had great local support by many area businesses, including: Everyman - a Rhode Island Bistro, Del's Lemonade, Wes' Rib House and Dunkin Doughnuts.

Community Garden

The Community Garden at Davis Park is going strong.  There are over 20 plots growing and plenty of positive energy.  There is still space for additional beds and we are looking for more community gardeners.

HousEART Community Project

Smith Hill Community Art ProjectSmith Hill Community Development Corporation is proud to announce the completion of our first Community Art Project by local artist, Lydia Stein,  located at 16 Bernon St.

HousEART seeks to connect Providence Artists with neighborhood children in order to turn vacant, blighted and recently foreclosed multi-family houses into temporary works of art.

This creative management of vacant housing is possible because the CDC owns the properties and they will be completely rehabilitated later in the year.

16  Bernon St. is just off Douglas Ave. and two blocks from Orms St. - a highly visible location on the commute for many downcity workers.  If you haven't already, please take a walk by to appreciate Ms. Stein's exceptional work.

If you would like to view more pictures of Ms. Stein's work or learn more,

Library News

Providence Community Library(PCL) is now the official manager of the Providence community (formerly "branch") library system!

Smith Hill Community Art ProjectIn addition, after an extensive national search for a library director, Providence Community Library has hired Rhode Island native Ann A. Robinson to supervise its new nine-branch library system.

Providence Community Library will be governed by a 25-member board of directors. In order to ensure broad-based representation and accountability to both patrons and taxpayers some board members will be elected by the branch library Friends groups, some will be appointed by the Mayor, the City Council, and the Governor, and some will be elected by the Board itself.

There has never been a better time to get involved with your local library branch as a library patron or as part of the branch Friends Group.
