Garden Build

On May 30, 2009,
the Davis Park Community
Garden was launched with
its first member workday. 21 garden beds were built and all but one small bed
have been claimed. Some gardeners have even started planting! Thirty volunteers
of all ages showed up to assist in the creation, placement and soil preparation
of the beds. There is still space for additional beds and we are looking for
more community gardeners. Click here for fliers in English and Spanish.

Community Art Project
Smith Hill Community Development Corporation is
proud to announce the beginning of an inspired and transformative Community Art
Project that is connecting Providence Artists with neighborhood children in
order to turn vacant, blighted and recently foreclosed multi-family houses into
temporary works of art. The
objective of the
project is to create public art directly on the exterior of vacant
houses. This can be done in these specific cases because the CDC owns the houses and the exteriors
will be completely replaced during the rehab, which is set to begin later in the year.
The first of these projects
is a mural by Smith Hill resident and artist, Lydia Stein,
and is located at 16-18 Bernon St, which is just off Douglas Ave. and two
blocks from Orms St. - a highly visible location on the commute for many
downcity workers.
If you would like to be involved in a project, please email your level of interest and ideas here.

Erasing the Defacing is a public/private partnership between the
Smith Hill Community Development
Corporation, Mt. Pleasant Hardware,
The City of Providence and Pittsburg Paints which is designed to help
homeowners, tenants and small business owners keep their properties
graffiti-free.
The program will supply a limited quantity of free
color-matched paint for use in the repainting
and maintenance of vandalized areas on Smith Hill and Mt. Pleasant properties. Click here to learn more.
