Greetings From Smith Hill CDC!

Smith Hill Community Development Corporation
would like to inform you about some interesting upcoming events and initiatives in the neighborhood.

As always, these community events and more can be found on our Community Calendar.

Davis Park Improvements!
Great things are happening in Davis Park.

Garden Build
Community garden Build
On May 30, 2009, the Davis Park Community Garden was launched with its first member workday. 21 garden beds were built and all but one small bed have been claimed. Some gardeners have even started planting! Thirty volunteers of all ages showed up to assist in the creation, placement and soil preparation of the beds. There is still space for additional beds and we are looking for more community gardeners.

Community Art Project
Bernon Street Mural

Smith Hill Community Development Corporation is proud to announce the beginning of an inspired and transformative Community Art Project that is connecting Providence Artists with neighborhood children in order to turn vacant, blighted and recently foreclosed multi-family houses into temporary works of art.  The objective of the project is to create public art directly on the exterior of vacant houses.  This can be done in these specific cases because the CDC owns the houses and the exteriors will be completely replaced during the rehab, which is set to begin later in the year.

The first of these projects is a mural by Smith Hill resident and artist, Lydia Stein, and is located at 16-18 Bernon St, which is just off Douglas Ave. and two blocks from Orms St. - a highly visible location on the commute for many downcity workers.

If you would like to be involved in a project, please email your level of interest and ideas here.

Library News

In a major shift that is certain to have a profound impact on many Providence residents, the Providence Community Library (PCL) is set to begin the management of all the branch libraries starting on July 1, 2009.  In a letter to the PCL declaring the city's intention to pull funding of the branches from the Providence Public Library, the Mayor wrote, "Your group has developed a capacity to operate the nine branch community library system, which ... will meet the city's needs."   A new chapter in the the city's library system is about to begin!  Please look on the website above to learn more.
