  Smith Hill News December 2008
Happy Holidays from everyone here at the Smith Hill Community Development Corporation!

This is our first online mailing designed to spread important news and developments in and around the Smith Hill Neighborhood of Providence.

We pledge to keep these messages short, direct and will send out no more than one per month.  It is our belief that we can enhance the continued development of our community through the creation and maintenance of social and professional networks and through the open sharing of information and ideas.

Later on in this winter we hope to have a major housing announcement that will be a great benefit to the entire neighborhood.  For now, here is list of the things we are working on as well as some great neighborhood news:

  • In partnership with the City Council, Mt. Pleasant Hardware and Pittsburgh Paints, Smith Hill CDC is set to launch a unique anti-graffiti initiative in March
  • Capitol Square at Smith Hill has been converted to rentals for the next two years and is filling up quickly.  For rental information please click here.
  • The new Aldi Supermarket is almost complete and scheduled to open December 15th
  • The State House Neighborhood Association, a group a Smith Hill residents, has successfully lobbied to place new street signs and traffic restrictions along Jewett and Calverly Streets.
  • The Smith Hill Business Association has reformed and will be holding its second meeting soon.  If you are interested in joining, please click here.
  • The Community Congress is an organization comprised of area non-profits, schools, churches and individuals committed to community building and improvement.  Last fall the Congress spearheaded the first phase of the Cemetery Wall restoration along Douglas Ave., which included plantings and the tear down of an old and broken fence along Chad Brown Street.

Smith Hill Library Christmas Bazaar

The Smith Hill Library Branch and The Smith Hill Library Friend's Group is sponsoring the annual Christmas Bazaar, Saturday, December 6th from 10-2.  This is a great family event, featuring a visit from Santa, gifts for children and a door prize/raffle of over 10 gift baskets which range from art supplies to a family movie night at any Showcase Cinema.

Also, please be generous this holiday season by supporting the local Smith Hill Library branch.  The Friend's Group is conducting a recruitment drive as well as a magazine subscription drive to replace the library periodicals lost to recent budget cuts.  Please consider being a member for only $5 a year or contributing a magazine subscription, which automatically enrolls you as a member.  For more details about the group and periodical needs, please CLICK HERE.

If you are ready to give now, checks can be made to "Friends of Smith Hill Branch Library", and sent to the Smith Hill Branch Library located at 31 Candace St., Providence 02908.  Magazine subscriptions average $20 for a year's subscription.
