Gardening with The Daylily Diva -- Tulips
| | Purple by Hazel Berger |
Dublin, Georgia nursery owner Andrea Day Purvis presents a gardening tip for right now in your garden. The Daylily Diva, Andrea Day Purvis
Tulips are one of the easiest flowers to grow successfully in the garden. Plant bulbs in the fall and even a beginner can expect to see
beautiful
flowers in the Spring!
Use large, top quality bulbs for best results. Select a sunny location with well-drained soil and dig to a depth of 6-8 inches. It is important to fertilize your bulbs at this point, because it will be difficult for the nutrients to reach them otherwise. Place bone meal or a bulb booster fertilizer in the hole and the bulbs on top with the point up. Cover with the soil, firm with your hands, and water well.
The bulbs will start to root immediately and continue throughout the winter months. The cold temperatures will stimulate them to sprout in early spring, and as the temperatures get warmer, your tulips start to grow rapidly and bloom! After the tulips have passed their peak, deadhead only the old blooms and let the foliage die down normally. This is necessary, if you want the tulips to return next Spring. |
