Gardening with The Daylily Diva

Dublin, Georgia nursery owner Andrea Day Purvis presents a gardening tip for right now in your garden.
Fall is an ideal time to plant daylilies - the perfect perennial! Daylilies are very easy to grow and come in every color, except true blue, with over 70,000 registered varieties.
First, select a sunny location with well-drained soil and till in organic material such as compost. Plant the daylily in the soil so that the crown (where the stem and roots meet) is no deeper than 1 inch below the soil surface. Space the plants about a foot apart. Water thoroughly and mulch them to protect against winter injury.
Daylilies establish quickly, grow vigorously and require little care. They are rarely troubled by insects or disease. Simply fertilize with a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10 and provide ample water each spring to encourage maximum bloom.
