Each October, Atlanta's photographers come together to celebrate photography. Many art galleries hang photography on their walls, and fans attend openings and lectures all month. These events are steamed by staff at Atlanta Celebrates Photography, a non-profit organization. ACP coordinates several big events including the portfolio review. During the day each selected photographer will meet with five reviewers. And, in the evening the public, that's you, is invited to view the portfolios and purchase art during the Portfolio Walk. This event is held from 6 pm - 8 pm at the Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center located at 800 Spring Street. Mark your calendar.

This month we are adding a new feature to the monthly email. Dublin, Georgia nursery owner Andrea Day Purvis presents a gardening tip for right now in your garden. Search Daylily Diva on Facebook.

In the South, now is the perfect time to plant, move or divide tall, bearded irises. By dividing you will rejuvenate bloom and have more plants! Simply lift the clump and cut the young productive rhizomes away from the older segments with a sharp knife. Trim the leaves to about a third of their original height. Checking for any signs of iris borers or disease, replant only the young, healthy Iris divisions in a sunny location with good drainage spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart. Point the fan in the direction you wish it to grow and cover the rhizome only lightly with soil - they should look like "ducks on the water". Irises that are planted too deep may not bloom and are much more susceptible to disease. Water the plant to settle the soil around the roots and periodically throughout the rest of the hot weather to help them establish before frost. Irises are beautiful, forgiving, drought resistant, and deer resistant!
