World-famous vocal expert Bill (William) Riley traveled for months with then Presidential candidate Bill Clinton on the campaign trail to get at the root of his persistent laryngitis before he came to the conclusion that the president's habitual jalapeno popping was the culprit.

Having to speak when your voice is having a bad day is frustrating. To keep your voice in working order, Dr. Riley and his speech pathologist wife Dr. Linda Carroll told me to drink lots of fluids at room temperature and to suck on Werther's butterscotch candies.

"The 'butter' keeps the vocal chords protected," Dr. Carroll told me. - And stay away from the jalapenos.
