What's Up at Advent Arlington Church
OCTOBER 27, 2009

Prayers Needed

100 Year Anniversary square
We need 14 volunteers to pray.  We hope to surround the Advent NACOME Youth Retreat in prayer, from start to finish.

The NACOME spiritual retreat for teenagers is coming up soon.  (Teens need to call Dan Eubanks at 901-277-6960 immediately if they want to attend).

For many teens, this will be the most spiritually influential time they have ever experienced.  But this can only happen as we pray for them, the leaders, and the adult advisors.  We need to pray that God's Spirit be set free in their hearts that weekend.

So please pray.  In particular, we are looking for 14 persons from Advent Arlington to pray for a 30 minute block between 5 pm and midnight on Saturday, November 7th during their retreat.  I plan on taking a block, and I hope that you will too.

Email me (Don) at dkerns@adventpres.com to indicate which time block you plan on praying.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child
Help Us Bring Joy to 100 Children

Advent has partnered with Samaritan's Purse to provide both Christmas gifts and a witness of Christ to third world children.

We do this by filling old shoe boxes with small Christmas presents that are then shipped to children in need around the world.

Last year along with your help we provided over 80 children with a Merry Christmas in Christ's name.  This year our goal is to reach 100 children.

We must have all the boxes completed and wrapped by November 15th, so we are beginning our collection drive now.

We need your old shoe boxes and items such as crayons, pencils, stickers, games, stuffed animals, jump ropes, toy cars, bubbles, and the like (all items available at your local dollar stores).  The items need to be able to fit in a shoe box.

Place your gifts in the large collection box outside our sanctuary on any Sunday. The box will be labeled "Operation Christmas Child".

This project is being headed up by Zach Johnson and our Huddle Youth Group.
Thank you in advance for helping in this mission and for bringing joy to so many children who have nothing.

Greetings!

Advent Church in Arlington has a unique heritage.  While much of the DNA of how we worship and the programs we are developing come from Advent, we also have some very important roots that come to us from the congregation that merged with Advent last August - Arlington Presbyterian Church.

Arlington Presbyterian Church formed exactly 100 years ago to serve Christ is this community.  We are celebrating this significant anniversary in worship and with a luncheon at Club Windward in Lakeland on Sunday, November 8th.

I am so glad that the people of Arlington Presbyterian Church have invited us to join them in serving Christ and expanding his Kingdom.  The same pioneering Spirit which led them to found a church in Arlington 100 years ago leads us as we are in our first year of ministry as a congregation.

Advent at Arlington Church, we are uniquely 100 years old and 1 year new!

In the Service of Christ Jesus,
Pastor Don Kerns

This Sunday we will complete our series of talks about the intersection of faith and our finances.  We have spoken of how our faith is greater than our fear when it comes to the economic crisis facing our nation.  Many practical issues of wise financial practices have been addressed.  And last Sunday we considered how we can ground our purpose in life more in God than in our possessions as we cultivate simplicity and contentment.

This Sunday is Commitment Sunday.  I ask that each family prayerfully consider how much money they will pledge to Advent Church's operating budget for 2010.  We hope that you will work towards a full tithe if you are not already doing so, taking whatever step of faith you feel God is calling you to make.  You will be asked to bring your offerings and pledges forward to the Lord's Table and receive Communion as an act of consecration of your offering.

May you find the joy that God intends you to experience with regard to material blessings as you practice simplicity and generosity.

Don't Forget!

Our Vision
We envision a church of committed disciples who cause God great joy by sharing His love with others as we have seen it in Jesus Christ.
Our Mission

Exalt: Provide an environment in which members and visitors glorify God and celebrate their faith in Jesus Christ as we worship God together.

Equip: Create Biblically literate disciples that witness for Christ, win others to him, and follow Christ as Savior and Lord in their daily lives.

Embrace: Nurture a sincere atmosphere of prayer, care, and sharing as we remain closely united in spirit and encourage one another in the things of God.

Empower: Demonstrate the Gospel as ambassadors of Christ through acts of loving concern, compassion, mission, and service to members, the community, and beyond.

Evangelize: Bring people to faith in Jesus Christ and welcome them into our fellowship.

Excel: To do all we do in excellence so we might glorify God in our efforts.

Our focus is on Worship, Children's Ministries, and Adult Growth Circles
