Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child
Help Us Bring Joy to 100 Children

Advent has partnered with Samaritan's Purse to provide both Christmas gifts and a witness of Christ to third world children.

We do this by filling old shoe boxes with small Christmas presents that are then shipped to children in need around the world.

Last year along with your help we provided over 80 children with a Merry Christmas in Christ's name.  This year our goal is to reach 100 children.

We must have all the boxes completed and wrapped by November 15th, so we are beginning our collection drive now.

We need your old shoe boxes and items such as crayons, pencils, stickers, games, stuffed animals, jump ropes, toy cars, bubbles, and the like (all items available at your local dollar stores).  The items need to be able to fit in a shoe box.

Place your gifts in the large collection box outside our sanctuary on any Sunday. The box will be labeled "Operation Christmas Child".

This project is being headed up by Zach Johnson and our Huddle Youth Group.
Thank you in advance for helping in this mission and for bringing joy to so many children who have nothing.
Scholarship Dinner & Show
Introduction to Advent Class
Don't miss these two entertaining events, both contributing to a good cause.

First, you may enjoy an elegant dinner with musical entertainment at Club Winward in Lakeland.  It will take place on Thursday, October 22nd at 6:30 pm.

Second is "Advent's Got Talent" Scholarship Show.  This is a talent/comedy show that is guaranteed to be entertaining.  It takes place at Advent's Cordova campus (1879 N. Germantown Parkway in Cordova) on Sunday, October 25th at 7 pm.  Admission is $5/person.

If you are interested in either of these events and would like to learn more, contact Brian Barnhill at 901-283-0767.

Both events support Advent's John Schober Scholarship Fund.  Each year, many young adults from Advent are awarded generous college scholarships from the money that these events raises.

Enough Banner

Greetings!

On Sunday I spoke of two "diseases" that are taking their toll on America and American families: affluenza and credit-itis.  Our desire for more and more, and better, and bigger "stuff", coupled with our desire to have it now on credit (since we can't afford it) have led to financial crisis.  This crisis has led to great suffering for many across our nation.  It has caused great fear and worry for almost everyone.

As I declared, this is not only a crisis of faith in our financial system, it is a crisis of our Christian faith.  Jesus preached, "Do not worry."  We are commanded to cast aside fear and instead believe and trust in God.

Over the next three weeks we will continue to examine our financial crisis from the perspective of our faith in Christ.  We will consider that in Christ, God has given us "Enough" that we need not fear.  We find hope in him, not only spiritually but financially, as we trust his Word and begin to let it re-form us.  We'll examine some of the key biblical wisdom regarding finances and how following these principles can set us free.  We'll hear Jesus' call to simplicity and contentment as the antidote to greed and coveting.  And we will discover that not only do we have "Enough" in Christ for ourselves, we have "Enough" to bless others and serve God through generosity.

On Sunday, November 1st, we ask that you make a pledge to Advent Church, covenanting with God as to how much you plan to tithe in 2010. Our goal is that every family take the time to pray about what they will pledge and then make a commitment as they are able.

Join us this month as we discover the joy that Christ brings us through simplicity and generosity as we place our hope in God.

"Command them not ...to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God." 1 Timothy 6:17

Tomorrow (Friday) night, October 16th from 5:30-9:00 pm

Kids, I hope you are ready for another fun night at Advent Arlington.  Come tomorrow at 5:30 pm and enjoy a craft, dinner, games, music, and a movie with snacks.  This month's theme is Halloween and we'll have crafts and activities to go with the theme.  You may even want to come wearing a halloween shirt if you have one.

Parent's enjoy your evening out and pick up your children by 9:30 pm.  Cost is $7/child.

And as always, this is open to everyone, not just church members.
Arlington Harvest Gathering
This Sunday from 4-10 pm, join Advent Arlington Church and others for fun, games, music on the square, and more at Arlington's Harvest Gathering.
We'll have a booth with a game and a person performing balloon sculptures.  Drop in and help us out, talk with persons interested in knowing more about our church, or help us later as we hand out glow sticks.

Our Vision
We envision a church of committed disciples who cause God great joy by sharing His love with others as we have seen it in Jesus Christ.
Our Mission

Exalt: Provide an environment in which members and visitors glorify God and celebrate their faith in Jesus Christ as we worship God together.

Equip: Create Biblically literate disciples that witness for Christ, win others to him, and follow Christ as Savior and Lord in their daily lives.

Embrace: Nurture a sincere atmosphere of prayer, care, and sharing as we remain closely united in spirit and encourage one another in the things of God.

Empower: Demonstrate the Gospel as ambassadors of Christ through acts of loving concern, compassion, mission, and service to members, the community, and beyond.

Evangelize: Bring people to faith in Jesus Christ and welcome them into our fellowship.

Excel: To do all we do in excellence so we might glorify God in our efforts.

Our focus is on Worship, Children's Ministries, and Adult Growth Circles
