Invite Cards
Have you ever mentioned Advent Arlington to a friend, then found yourself trying to explain how to get there, or perhaps struggling to remember the web-site or phone number to give them?

We are creating some "Invite" cards that are essentially business cards with the basic information about our church, contact info, and a map.

You can carry them in your purse, wallet, pocket, or car and have them at the ready to offer a friend or neighbor who you want to invite.

Look for them to arrive soon.

Administrative Assistant
Advent Arlington now has an Administrative Assistant to provide support to Don and the work of our church.

Kelly Henson has agreed to work two half-days each week and has just begun to attack her "To Do" list.

Don comments on this development: "Hallelujah!"

Acolytes Needed
We are in search of more children who are interested in serving as acolytes on Sunday mornings.  The role of the acolyte is to light and extinguish the candles at the beginning and end of worship.

If your child is interested, please contact Alison Bryan at 901.829.3224 or alicream1@yahoo.com.

January 2009
Thoughts from January . . .
by Tracey Moss

As the cold winter days fill the month, I find myself in a reflective mood remembering  how my faith has been tested before . . . tests I have both failed and passed; there is no perfection in this all too human body.   As friends and associates call and write to both offer, and get support through these challenging times, I think of all God asked of Abraham.  Of the many trials he faced, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith as he lay his only son,  Isaac, down upon the altar.  Is my faith so strong that during these tough economic times, during times of poor health, and the unknown challenges that with certainty lie before us. . . is my faith in my Lord strong enough to remember what hope truly is?

Hope are the friends God sends us in support, the words of our Pastor as he reminds us of a better path, perhaps hidden to our human eyes but always known to the Lord's.  For a Christian, Hope is remembering there is always something more, a better place, another path, a new opportunity.   I take great comfort in this time for our country, in this time for our church, knowing that to appreciate what is good, we must experience what may not readily appear to be so, that in order for the trees to bloom in the spring they must hibernate in the winter,  and then I feel the chill across my skin, almost as if God is speaking to my heart and think . . . so maybe this is just God's winter . . . that I'm not being asked to have the faith of Abraham only the faith to believe that Spring will come.  It may not be this March or even the next, but that this too, whatever challenges that lie ahead or each of us, shall pass with the help and support of our friends and family in Christ.
Christmas Recap

Christmas Eve Worship - group

The Christmas season was filled with special events and now memories at Advent Arlington.  It began as we created a float for the Christmas parade.  People like Cody Conley (seen working on the float trailer, and after welding it he stayed up into the night painting it fire engine red) put a lot of work into the float.  Then our praise team went through historic Arlington singing of the joy of Christmas and an Advent choir formed in the town square the parade to sing carols until the town tree was lit.

On Sunday, our children performed a play about "Who Was Born on this Special Day?"  Then on Christmas Eve we celebrated the holy night in worship, songs, and candlelight and we were blown away by the number of people who came to worship.  It was a packed house!  Our first Christmas at Advent Arlington was a merry one indeed.

In 1990, a Super Bowl Sunday prayer inspired a group of young Presbyterian teens in to do something more than celebrate a football game. They created the Souper Bowl of Caring, and have since mobilized youth across the country in thousands of churches to raise more than $50 million for people in need.

On Sunday February 1st, 140 million Americans will tune in to the Super Bowl football game.  There will be parties with abundant food, friendship, and fellowship. At the same time there will be people worrying about staying warm, finding shelter, and a warm meal.  Please join young people around the country as they demonstrate God's love by loving their neighbors through the Souper Bowl of Caring.  It's a simple yet significant act of caring for others.  Place a can of soup in the vestibule and drop $1 (or more) in the soup pot as you leave worship on February 1st.  Those who need help may not know that you cared, but God will. And our young people are developing hearts for giving that can last a lifetime.  Please support their efforts.

So don't forget: This Sunday each person is challenged to bring $1 and 1 can of soup.  Our donations will be divided between MIFA and the First Presbyterian Church of Memphis soup kithchen.

40 Days of Love Spiritual Growth Campaign

40 Days BannerJoin us for a six-week study, to love God with all our heart and love your neighbor as yourself.  Jesus once said that of all the commands in Bible only these two were the most important.

On the weekend of February 22, the Advent family will begin our focus on those two commands.  This is a time we will come together for 40 days to focus on loving relationships.  With so much turmoil, division and polarization around us daily, we could all use some lessons in building healthy relationships, and that's all it's about . . . healthy relationship building.
Every small group in our church will go through 40 Days of Love simultaneously.  If you're not in a group, you are encouraged to join one or start one yourself so that you can be a part of what will happen in our church these 40 days. I know that this study of what the Bible says about love will bring a revival of love to our relationships, both inside and outside of the church!

We were made for relationships. The more we learn to how to love authentically, the more like Jesus we can become.
