Basketball Homecoming on February 6th! Greetings!
Join us Friday, February 6th for our annual Basketball Homecoming as we host the men's & women's teams from Johnson Bible College. During halftime of the men's game members of the Knights' 1988 and 1989 and the Lady Knights' 1989 teams will join us for a stroll down memory lane. In '88 and '89 the Knights won back-to-back National Championships. In '89 the Lady Knights joined them with a National Championship of their own. These accomplishments distinguished KCU as the first school on any collegiate level to win both men's & women's championships in the same year! What a terrific accomplishment for Kentucky Christian University. Join us as we honor all three teams and commemorate these first championship seasons from 20 years ago. Alumni Reception
Following the game join us in the Waters Cafeteria for a post-game Alumni Reception with pizza & fixins' and a chance to catch up with alumni friends.
Late-Knight Comedy
Feel up to some late-night fun? Join us in the Student Life Center for "Grounds & Sounds", a late-night coffee house experience featuring KCU alum and all-around funny guy John Branyan ('94)! John is making quite a name for himself on the comedy scene and is in town for the Nick Nischan Foundation banquet scheduled Saturday evening, February 7th. Opening up for John is another KCU alum: up-and-coming comedian, Mel Mendoza ('90) . Approximate start time for "Grounds & Sounds" is 10:30 pm. Hope you can make plans to join us!

2009 Alumni Directory |
Many have asked about the progress of our current Alumni Directory project. We're still on track to have the directory available for mailing to those who have purchased it around the first week of May. It's not too late to verify your information, add any changes you may have, or to order your own directory. This information is very helpful for a number of reasons - not the least of which is that it tells us where our alumni are and in what capacity they are serving.
Please Act Now!
It will soon come to a point where it will be too late to get your updated information in the new directory. If you haven't gotten around to responding, please do! Contact PCI, the directory representatives, at 1-866-786-1733. Tell them you're calling about the Kentucky Christian University directory project, and provide your current details. Additionally, if you have not yet updated your information with PCI but are in KCU's current email address bank, you may get a follow-up email from them asking for your updated information. Thanks for helping us in this important and exhaustive endeavor! |
Alumni Spotlight - Darrel Land ('95) |
What brought you to KCU?
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to preach (from age 3 on). My other choice of profession was to be an ice cream man, but I eventually realized that it didn't have much of a future. When I started to look at college choices, my minister at the time had been a part of the Masters of Ministry at KCU and he suggested I check it out. I did, and though I was very homesick at first, the faculty, staff, and my fellow students cared about me and helped me get past my early apprehension.
Describe the years briefly following your graduation in '95.
After graduation I spent 5 years in youth and associate ministry in two different churches in Indiana. It was in these years that I began to see God working through the relationships I was building, and I was able witness transformation happening in the lives of people.
Describe your current ministry involvement.
In the late 1990's I felt a real call and passion for this particular town where my brother lived of about 13,000 people where there was no Restoration church. It was a predominantly Catholic area, with no Missional approaches to ministry that were apparent in the surrounding communities. I sought out the prayer support and counsel of spiritual friends for some time, and eventually resigned my ministry position and made preparations to plant a new church in Jasper, Indiana. I made contact with a dozen or so local people who said they would attend, and we had our first service on May 21st, 2000, which happened to be my 27th birthday!
What has taken place since that day almost 9 years ago?
I still serve as the senior minister of the Christian Church of Jasper. God has blessed us so much and has added to our number every year. We now are averaging over 650 people for Sunday worship and continue to grow and impact lives for Christ. It has been thrilling to watch God send us the right people at the right time and to watch Him build the church. It has also been incredible to see my family grow with the church. My wife Holli and I have two children, Livia (5 yrs) and Jace (1 yr) who have the privilege of spending their formative years in such a great, dynamic church.
How did your time at KCU prepare you for today?
Of course my Bible training and practical ministry classes prepared me in many ways. But by far, the relationships I established while at KCU and the ministries that I was exposed to have been invaluable to me in my ministry endeavors. The mentoring that I received from individuals like Dr. Damron prepared me for kingdom work in ways the classroom alone could never do.

KCU Alumni - Your Input Needed for New KCU Website! |
KCU is getting ready to embark on a major website overhaul in 2009. We are always looking for better and more efficient ways to showcase our University to the world. Since you as Alumni are important members of the KCU family, we're soliciting your input on ways to improve our site. If you have ideas, please submit an email to website@kcu.edu. We will evaluate each idea for its possible use. Thank you in advance for your help. |
Random 'Facts From The Foothills'
- There are over 50 more students (full & part-time) for the Spring 2009 semester than during this same time last year.
- Thirty-six Grayson area high school juniors and seniors are participating in a unique program called 'Out Of The Blocks', designed to give HS students a taste of the college classroom and a jumpstart on their college credits.
- Approximately 2.6 million dollars in scholarships will be awarded to KCU students for this school year in both the Undergraduate & Graduate programs. These scholarships are paid from the KCU general fund and would not be possible without the financial support of our alumni, friends and churches.
- In 1951, there were a total of 48 cars on campus among all faculty, staff & students. Times have changed a bit - today there are 563 registered vehicles!
- It's expensive to make KCU function on a monthly basis. For example, in December, our electric bill alone was a whopping $36,701.42!
- KCU will be hosting Regional and National Tournament action this year! It's coming in March - click here for more details.

"Every Church in 2009 Initiative" |
The relationship that KCU has with its supporting churches is critical to our existence. Keeping costs to our students low while at the same time maintaining quality education is a significant challenge, especially in these difficult days of economic stress. President Keeran, along with the Church Relations office, is kicking off the "Every Church in 2009 Initiative" in an effort to update the local churches on the current activities of the University. We are hoping to have a KCU representative in all of our supporting churches in the upcoming year. Letters to churches and ministers are being mailed this week. Want more information, or want to schedule a visit to your church? Contact the Church Relations office (aserhal@kcu.edu or vmarshall@kcu.edu), or call 606.474.3127. | |
If you have suggestions or comments about the E-insider, don't hesitate to pass them along. This is not intended to replace The Voice, and we promise not to crowd your inbox too often. But from time to time, as there are items we want to pass along to you that seem valuable, we'll send out another issue.
Have a warm and wonderful Winter season!
