Welcome to the Inaugural Alumni E-Insider

Greetings!

After graduating from KCU in 1989, I had no idea that I would one LM webday return to campus in the role of Alumni Relations Officer - or that I would return in any capacity at all! But over the course of several months of prayer, discussion, and a fair amount of head-scratching, my wife Vicki ('87) and I felt as though it was time to venture into ministry in a new and different way. So here we are, back where we met, fell in love, and began our almost 20 years of ministry together. (Click HERE for a bit more about our journey).

I'm thrilled to once again be a part of the campus community and am looking forward to serving you however I can. Please don't hesitate to contact me with your questions, updates, or concerns. I understand how easy it is to be disconnected from what's going on at your alma mater. It's my hope that these periodic E-Insider reports will be a valuable tool to keep us all connected with KCU.

Sincerely,
Larry Marshall
Alumni Relations Officer

Presidential Search Status Report
Monday, November 24th, 2008

TO: Members of the KCU Community
FR: Robert L. Waters, Chair, Presidential Search Committee

From the beginning of the presidential search process the Committee has been committed to a nationwide search. We have literally considered nominees from both ends of the country and from North to South. Many of you have been very helpful to this nomination process and we are grateful for your thoughtful participation.

We are especially grateful for the prayers that have been lifted up on behalf of the Committee. We have earnestly placed our task before God and we are confident that He is working in this process and that His choice for the University's next president is already determined.  His choice however has not yet become evident to the Committee.

It will soon be one year since this search began. While it is not uncommon for presidential searches to take as much as two years, we know that many are anxious for a selection to be made. While the Committee is anticipating that the search will soon be fruitful, we are determined not to rush a recommendation to the board.

During a recent conference call Dr. Keeran was asked to join the conference for a few minutes. The Committee's conversation with Dr. Keeran centered on his willingness to continue past the current academic year. This is an important question in light of the University's preparation for reaffirmation of accreditation. While it may be ideal for a president-elect to be initiated in matters concerning accreditation through participation in the current reaffirmation process, we have to be prepared for the possibility that a presidential successor will not emerge in time to take advantage of this opportunity. It is important that the University have presidential leadership in place that is comfortable with and knowledgeable of regional accreditation as we move toward 2010.

Dr. Keeran has agreed to remain at his post on the conditions that the search continues to make forward progress, and that should a successor emerge that the board will proceed speedily, but carefully with the appointment process.

The Committee is currently considering viable candidates for the position of President of the University and will keep you informed regarding the status of the search as we have information to pass your way. We ask you to continue to pray for the Committee as we seek the wisdom of God in the performance of this sacred trust.

With prayers of Thanksgiving,

Robert L. Waters, Chair
Presidential Search Committee
2009 Alumni Directory

knight 100Every 5 years or so, it's important that we go through the process of creating a new Alumni Directory. Chances are, you've gotten the phone calls & postcards in the mail regarding our Alumni Directory project currently in process. Hopefully, you've responded with your updated info. This information is very helpful for a number of reasons - not the least of which is just to know where our alumni are serving and in what capacity. If you haven't gotten around to responding, please do! Contact our directory representatives at 1-866-786-1733, tell them you're calling about the Kentucky Christian University directory project, and provide your current details. Thanks for helping us in this important and exhaustive endeavor!

Alumni Spotlight - Tara Woolard ('98)
alumni spotlightWhat brought you to KCU?
I was a student athlete at another college, and through that experience became familiar with KCU. I was particularly impressed with their women's basketball program, coupled with the fact that my desired degree (Teacher Ed) could be easily pursued in a Christian college environment without cross-enrolling in another school. The professors at KCU made me feel so much at home. Being a part of a great Lady Knights basketball program under coach Ron Arnett continues to this day to be one of the best things that could have happened to me. Our team was truly a family, and I grew a lot spiritually in those years.

Describe the years briefly following your graduation in '98.
After graduation I spent a year in Venezuela teaching at an international school in the capital city of Caracas. I returned home to raise support and also to attend language school in Costa Rica. A year later I returned to Venezula with Team Expansion and joined a group of missionaries who were starting a new church plant. Those next six years were the most challenging, humbling, and wonderfully rewarding years of my life. The church that I was privileged to be a part of now has an attendance of 600, and God continues to do amazing things through His people there.

twoolardDescribe your current ministry involvement.
I am currently working with another Team Expansion Hispanic church in Louisville, KY. I also volunteer at a Free Medical Clinic for Hispanics and uninsured Americans in Shelbyville, KY. Some of my time is spent helping to coach a 3rd-5th grade basketball team at a local elementary school. And in my spare time, I still partner with KCU as a Field Representative in the Louisville area, helping to recruit students for KCU, and helping to inform area churches about what's taking place at my alma mater!

Random 'Facts From The Foothills'
  • There are currently 41 international students at KCU from 10 countries: Haiti, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Nepal, Serbia, Kenya, Ghana, Peru, Wales, and Myanmar. Most receive full tuition scholarships funded through the KCU general budget, totalling over $425,000 annually.
  • In the 1930's, a young boy named Lawrence Morton from North Middletown, KY heard a presentation by President J.W. Lusby. That afternoon, he brought his only earthly possession to give to the college: a duck. The duck was brought to campus, where it lived with the chickens at the Lusby home until it died.
  • Approximately 2.6 million dollars in scholarships will be awarded to KCU students for this school year in both the Undergraduate & Graduate programs.
  • KCU's total campus encompasses 121 acres and 19 buildings.
  • KCU's Men's & Women's Basketball teams have amassed a total of 18 NCCAA II National Championships.
If you have suggestions or comments about the E-insider, don't hesitate to pass them along. This is not intended to replace The Voice, and we promise not to crowd your inbox too often. But from time to time, as there are items we want to pass along to you that seem valuable, we'll send out another issue.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
