Shabbat Shalom

שבת שלום

Candlelighting: 4:29pm

Vayishlach

וישלח

Torah Portion: Genesis 32:4 - 36:43

Haftarah: Obadiah 1:1 - 1:21

Yasher Koach to today's Torah readersNico D., Jon N., and Sam M.

Greetings!

Seventy percent of American Jews trace their ancestry to Poland.  This percentage climbs when neighboring Eastern European countries are included: Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Romania, the former Czechoslovakia, Hungary.  These are the places where the Jews once lived as a substantial minority- speaking a language of their own, Yiddish.  Jews lived in the big cities, in the countryside, and especially, in the small towns, known as shtetls.  Before this world was utterly destroyed by Hitler, it was depleted by emigration and devastated by poverty.  And yet... it is still alive in our memories and in the literature of Sholem Aleichem (among others).  We will be bringing this world back to life on the Gesher Jewish Day School stage this Chanukah in our production of Fiddler on the Roof!

Along with Fiddler, all of our classes will be celebrating the culture and thousand year legacy of Eastern European Jews this month with lessons on the wise men of Chelm, Yiddish songs, Chasidic legends, Yiddish vocabulary, the secret of the latke, etc.  We hope to make this cultural immersion a lot of fun for the students and teachers alike- an emese farginigin (a true delight).

When I was little, I used to think that speaking Yiddish was part of the aging process- like getting wrinkles. I have always been fascinated by the world over there that my grandparents came from.  This spring, between Purim and Pesach, I will be taking a (well-earned) mini-sabbatical.  I've decided to go to Poland and the Ukraine, on a kind of heritage journey.  My goal is to learn what I can about how the Jews of Eastern Europe lived, to see the synagogues, cemeteries and other physical remnants that they have left behind, to visit the Jewish communities that in some places are being re-formed, and to find the shtetl that my grandmother came from almost one hundred years ago.  (While I am away, Mrs. Gordon will be serving as Interim Head of School.  More information about these arrangements will be forthcoming when we get back from Winter Break.)  I hope to bring back many pictures and much more to share with the students.

In the mean time, we have a few weeks to get in the mood for Fiddler and Chanukah.  As the weather gets colder (which it will) may the lights of our inner-shtetls glow brighter and warmer.

Shabbat Shalom!

Introducing Andrea LoBalbo, MSW!

Mrs. LoBalbo, MSW, of JSSA will be filling in for Mrs. Strouse as Gesher's interim Guidance Counselor from January through the end of March, 2012, while Mrs. Strouse is away on maternity leave.  Mrs. L will be visiting Gesher on Friday, December 9th to meet parents and students!  Parents, please join us from 8:30am- 9:00am for coffee and a chance to personally meet Mrs. L!  All students will get the opportunity to meet her later in the morning.  We are very excited to have Mrs. L join us at Gesher!

New ABC Late Pick-Up Policy

Gesher ABC has a great program this year and we appreciate your support.  We also need your assistance in assuring a timely conclusion to the day in Gesher ABC.

Gesher ABC is scheduled to end each day at 6:00 PM.  Mrs. Lippold and the building security officer are paid to be on duty until 6:00pm on school days.  Therefore, we ask that Gesher ABC parents be out of the building, with their children and belongings in hand, by 6:00pm.  When students are picked up late, both our security officer and Mrs. Lippold must also stay late to accommodate the late pick-up and they are paid accordingly.

We have budgeted to absorb a few late extensions of Gesher ABC each year, but we have already exceeded these occasions by a good margin.  Therefore, we will now be activating the late pick-up fees described in the Gesher ABC agreement, namely that $25 will be charged for every 15 minutes you are late, or fraction thereof.  Please note: Late pick-up is measured from the time you leave the building (and not from the time you arrive).  If you are late, Mrs. Lippold will have a late pick-up form for you to fill out.

Thanks in advance for your support and we look forward to a safe and fun year in Gesher ABC!

Student Council Sufganiyot fundraiser!

Just in time for Chanukah the Student Council will be having a doughnut/sufganiyot fundraiser. The doughnuts will be sold on Tuesday December 20th and Thursday December 22nd. The doughnuts will be on sale during lunchtime and will cost $1.  Each student is allowed to buy one doughnut per day. Happy Chanukah!

Winter MAP Begins Soon after Winter Break- Jan 17th and 19th

The new session of MAP will be here before you know it.  This time we are offering lots of new classes.  There's sure to be something for everyone here.

The new classes on Tuesday are:

  • WeDo Robotics (K-3) This class will have our youngest students building and programming their own Lego Robots.  The class is 90 min long.
  • American Sign Language (K-4) Children will learn to "talk" without making a sound, just the way deaf children do.
  • Math Club (1-4) Children who love math will enjoy this hour of number games and puzzles led by our PE teacher, Coach Russo.

On Thursday we also have:

  • Chess Wizards (K-5) Here is a chance to learn to play, or to improve one's skills in this great strategy game.  There's also the possibility of a competition with another school.
  • Photography (2-6) Professional photographer and Gesher mom, Elyssa Brecher, will get the children shooting and editing their own pictures.
  • Knitting (4-8) Gesher senior Miryam Mendelson is leading this.  Participants will learn to knit, then participate in creating blankets for orphans in Africa.
  • Quilting (4-8) Mrs. Rosenblatt, our resident expert quilter, will teach this art form.  The participants will choose their project during the first class.

Plus, there are lots of favorite classes that are returning.  Check it out HERE.  Sign up begins now, so your children don't miss out on any of these wonderful classes.

If you know any children in your neighborhood who would like to participate in MAP classes, have them contact Gesher.  Classes are NOT limited to Gesher students only.

The Shtetl Comes to Gesher!

See what Gesher students are doing in their classes to learn about the Shtetl:

Gan:  Kindergarten students will read Something from Nothing to show how families lived either with or very cose to each other- and compare that to how families are so spread out.

Kitah Alef:  First grade students will read more Chelm stories and study the pictures that accompany each story.  They will also learn "Oh Chanukah" in Yiddish which the class can perform for the rest of the school.

Kitah Bet and Kitah Gimel: Second and third grade students will dress up for a Shtetel fair, which will have booths representing the life in the shtetel.

Kitah Dalet and Kitah Hay: Fourth and fifth grade students will organize a picture exhibit of the life in a shtetl.

Kitah Vav: Sixth grade students will study Yiddish idioms.

Kitah Zayin and Kitah Chet: Seventh and eight grade students will read stories of the Besh"t relating to tzedek.

Eco Dvar Torah Vayishlach

This week's haftarah is from the prophet Hoshea. Living during the period of kings, Hoshea saw a lot of misdeeds done from king and peasant alike. His prophecy is not a happy one. However, the job of the prophet is never done without at least a glimmer (if not a shining beacon!) of hope. And hope can often be seen in nature. "The L-rd will roar like a lion ... His children shall come back, fluttering like sparrows ... and doves!" (Hoshea 7:10-11). If we pause and look at that word "dove" we can easily remember the greatest hope of all: the dove that Noah sent out, which brought back the olive branch. Even through wintry weather is ahead of us, take the time to see how much beauty nature still has to offer!
