Yasher Koach to today's Torah readers: Sam M., Coby, Jonathan

Greetings!

There is a lot to be learned from the print and the images that surround us.  This is why we jumped at the idea of hosting a traveling exhibit called, "Jewish Life in Lincoln's City."   The exhibit is put together by the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington and depicts the Jewish community on both sides of the Potomac- DC and Northern Virginia- during the trying years of the American Civil War.

Having grown up in a state whose license plates proudly proclaim, "Land of Lincoln," I will admit to a deeply conditioned appreciation of the late President.  It's nice then, to learn, that Mr. Lincoln had friends in the Jewish community.  Even more, it is good to learn that when the Jewish community faced blatant discrimination, Lincoln was someone who could be appealed to for justice!

We have added a portrait at the far left of the lobby from another collection of images-  this one a photograph of Lincoln towards the end of his Presidency.   How the war had aged him!   On the day before Thanksgiving this striking picture will be given out on loan for one month to the student or team of students who answer the most questions correctly on the set of questions available by following the link here.  In addition, a $25 gift certificate to Barnes and Noble will be given to the winning student or team.  All answers can be learned by a careful reading of the exhibit posters.  Additional entry forms will be available at our guard's desk.  All entries are due on Monday, November 22, at 3:30 pm.  In the case of a tie, a drawing will be held to select one grand winner amongst the winning entries.

Shabbat Shalom!

Head, Heart, and Hand Update:

Our HHH program started in a lovely way this Fall. We had a wonderful Kabbalat Shabbat service in which the Gan through 5th Grade made presentations about each of their mitzvah themes for the year. Using imaginative posters and interactive discussions, we related that week's parasha about Noah being a righteous man to our own ability and duty to fulfill the Jewish tradition and value of Tikkun Olam.

On Grandparents'/VIP day on November 23, 2010, each grade will continue to learn about their mitzvah theme through various projects completed with our special guests. The Gan will implement their theme of "Welcoming Guests" as they actually welcome many guests into their classroom to make picture frames together. The 1st Grade will accomplish their mitzvah of "Kindness to Animals" by making bird feeders. In 2nd Grade, the students and guests will weave placemats for Thanksgiving to give to those who are in need. This activity teaches the students about "Loving your Neighbor as Yourself". The 3rd Grade's mitzvah of "Visiting the Sick" will be fulfilled by making fleece blankets for the Ronald McDonald House. In the 4th Grade, the students and guests will examine their theme of "Opening the Eyes of the Blind" through an experiment of guiding a blindfolded partner to draw pictures. The 5th Grade's theme is "How Wondrous are God's Creations". The students and guests will interview each other about difficult situations they have overcome and will focus on how special they feel because of those experiences. The 6th grade will study a midrash focused on taking care of the earth. The 7th Grade will watch a video and use text to better understand disability awareness. The 8th Grade will focus on their theme of "Assisting the Stranger" through examining different immigration stories.

We look forward to accomplishing so many meaningful projects on Grandparents'/VIP Day and of course throughout the whole school year!

 Chanukah Musical:  The Odd Potato

As in previous years, Gesher will perform an all school Chanukah musical for family and guests at our annual Chanukah family celebration.  We are already in the thick of production!  This year, the celebration will be the eighth night of Chanukah, Wednesday, Dec 8th.  Mark your calendar, you will not want to miss it!  The story of the Odd Potato is a charming adaptation about siblings and their challenges to having a family Chanukah celebration.  Each elementary grade has a featured song to perform and they are busy learning their song in music class.  Selected performers from our Middle School serve to narrate and act out the story to tie the songs altogether!

A pre-show dinner by Z-tov will again be coordinated by the PTO.To make reservations for your family visit  https://www.gesher-jds.org/rsvp.php .  The cost is $10 per dinner.  As always, our afterschool program is available on a drop-in basis if it is more convenient for you to meet your child(ren) here at Gesher at 5:45pm for dinner and then the program.  Please do provide notice to Meredith Parnes mparnes@gesher-jds.org if you'd like to take advantage of afterschool drop-in care that Wednesday; there will be a flat $10 charge.  We will be staffing as necessary for the number of children who RSVP.

Whether or not you plan to join us for dinner, all students are asked to report to the Gesher gym no later than 6:30 that evening, where parent volunteers will be ready to help the children get into their places, costumes and warm up their voices!  The gym will be open to parents at 6:55 for audience seating and the performance begins at 7pm.  The show will run around one hour.  We look forward to celebrating Chanukah with our school community!  Thanks to so many volunteers, both PTO and classroom parents who are helping with many aspects of the evenings festivities and show!
