| Greetings! |
"Am haSefer" - "The People of the Book" is a well-earned designation for the Jewish people. The Book referenced by this is the Torah in all its nuances and layers. According to tradition, when Moshe (Moses) received the Torah on Mt. Sinai, he received a written Torah and an Oral Torah. The core of the written Torah, the five books of Moses, was supplemented by two additional collections: Neviim, the books of the prophets, and Ketuvim, the writings. These three elements: Torah, Neviim, and Ketuvim, are known by their Hebrew acronym, Tanach. This is the Hebrew Bible- but not the whole Torah and not nearly all of the Book in the designation, "the People of the Book."
The Oral Torah was committed to writing about 1400-1900 years ago. The sages taught the law in pithy purposeful chunks called the Mishnah and later generations expounded on them at some length in an expansive associative outpouring called the Gemara. Taken together, the Mishnah and the Gemara are called the Talmud. The Talmud forms the backbone of the curriculum in the yeshivot of previous generations- and still to this day. This more than anything else is the Book the Jewish people have been engrossed in for our many centuries of dispersion.
The Talmud has been called a "sea." In our Middle School we teach our students rudimentary strokes so they can swim a bit out at sea and explore a bit of the shoreline. This is not to put down our program- the opposite- it's to underline the enormity of the task! There are a number of efforts which have been made in the past few decades to open up the Talmud and make it more accessible to us. Among the most recent of these are many which have taken advantage of the digital revolution. You can open up any page of the Gemara on-line, get a pod-cast of a rabbi explicating the text, and click through commentaries on the text's deeper meaning.
Perhaps the greatest initiative to open up the Talmud to the common person in our generation has been Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz' project to recast the Talmud and its main commentaries simultaneously into modern everyday Hebrew and into modern everyday English (plus other European languages) for the international student. Rabbi Steinsaltz' remarkable project has been going for 45 years and will be complete on November 7 with the conclusion of the last volume, Taanit. A grand siyum, called, The Day of Global Jewish Learning, has been announced to mark the occasion. Click here to learn more. Study sessions/celebrations have been set up around the world- so we will do our bit at Gesher, as well. Our program will be a "Brunch and Learn" for students and parents together from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon. We hope you can join us that morning to study texts that teach us how to respond to our environment- the inspiration for our Gesher Green!
Shabbat Shalom!

Board of Directors
|
It was wonderful to meet many of you and see familiar faces at our recent Back-to-School nights. On behalf of the Gesher Board of Directors, I am delighted that you and your children are part of the Gesher family and believe (as stated in our school mission) that your choice of Jewish day school is one of the best ways to ensure that your children will:
-Be passionate about learning
-Practice justice, kindness, and respect
-Aspire to a life guided by Jewish values, Torah, and community
This year we shared the start of school with the Jewish holidays, but now we are in full swing and would like to encourage you to join one of our board committees. The areas in which we are seeking parents (or community members if you can recommend them) are buildings and grounds, long-term capital development (including major gifts, endowments and grant writing), fund raising (including soliciting for the annual fund and help planning the spring event), marketing & public relations and environmental sustainability at the school/campus. Please let me know if you have expertise and/or interest in one of these areas by contacting me at jazmom4@gmail.com.
I'm also proud to share with you that Gesher has been asked to lead a session at the upcoming Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education Assembly for the Advancement of Day School Education (www.peje.org). In the session, entitled Cutting the Apron Strings: From "Mom and Pop" to a Mature Strategic Operation, we will present the development of our school as a case study and explore the decisions that were made along the way in our 29-year history. I look forward to reporting back to you on this session and on the ideas and insights our board members bring back from the conference.
As always, please feel free to contact me with your ideas, concerns or comments!
Ann Bennett
President, Gesher JDS Board of Directors

Gesher United Soccer lost in a heartbreaker yesterday- 5-4.
Time of the Nature Walk Changed to Noon
Due to popular demand, the time of this Sunday's nature walk has been changed to 12:00 noon. We may see fewer birds at that late hour, but it will still be a great time to explore the many varied habitats here at Gesher. And there is so much to see here! We have been seeing two fox almost every day. In the meadow we have goldenrod and asters blooming. The vernal pond is beginning to fill up again as the surrounding trees slow down on their photosynthesis. The trees are beginning to develop lovely fall colors. Here at Gesher we are blessed with an incredible campus with much wildlife. Come explore it all this Sunday at noon, with Jeanne Leckert.
Seventy-five percent of all students at Gesher, grades 3-8, qualify for the John's Hopkins Talent Search based on outstanding scores on standardized testing....and at Gesher we never teach to the test! Gesher is a "100 Top School" for the state of Virginia for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Talent Search.
Registration for Parent Teacher Conferences is On-Line
Simply go to our website, www.gesher-jds.org, log in, and click on the quick link, "Conference Signup," at the bottom left. Appointment slots are filling up!
We're On the Map
A very special exhibition game of basketball has been arranged through the Israel Consulate for the students of Jewish day schools featuring Tal Brodie, legendary Israeli basketball star. Gesher students in grades 5-8 are invited to join a free-throw competition and all Gesher students are invited to attend at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School Lower School Gym, October 24 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Watch for a flyer to be released soon.
Occasional Riders
Our school buses are well subscribed this year! On our red bus, in particular, we are close to our maximum ridership. So, while we are happy to accommodate occasional riders on the school bus when we have advanced notice and there is room available on the bus (for a one-way fare of $10), priority must be given to contracted five-day per week riders. Therefore, you must call ahead and receive the go-ahead to put an occasional rider on the bus.

Spotlight on the Wetlands
One habitat here at Gesher is especially uncommon. It is the vernal pond and wetlands. A vernal pond is a pool of water that is seasonal. In spring (after the "vernal equinox") it fills up with water from rain and snow melt. During the summer droughts it dries out and becomes grassland. The disadvantage of this is that it cannot support fish. This is also a great advantage! Since there are no fish, it is a perfect nursery for amphibians -- frogs, toads, and salamanders. Young amphibians have gills and breathe water. Our young amphibians can develop in the vernal pool without fear of fish predators. World-wide, amphibians are in trouble. Over half of them are endangered. One theory for their demise is that they need two separate habitats to survive: ponds for the aquatic young and healthy woodlands for the air-breathing adults. Here at Gesher, we have both! On rainy nights in early spring adult frogs and salamanders come from the woods to the pond to mate. The air is full of the loud calls of the "spring peepers" and wood frogs. Large Spotted Salamanders can travel several miles to get here. Later we have tadpoles and salamander larva by the thousands swimming in our vernal pond. By early June there are tiny frogs, no bigger than your thumbnail, hopping around. It is very exciting.
The vernal pond and surrounding wetlands are just off the parking lot. The Gan and their fifth grade buddies will be spending time learning about and protecting this station. There is a sitting area nearby for outdoor activities. It is beautiful to see.

Were some of Shakespeare's major works written by a Jewish woman?
|
|
Andree Brooks, journalist, author and lecturer, will present "The Unlikely Tale of Amelia Bassano." A woman of Jewish heritage is now believed to have been a major influence behind Shakespeare and his canon. Using update research, we place the life of this woman, Amelia Bassano, as a hidden Jew in London at that time the context of her era. We further explore the multiple achievements of the brilliant and sexy Amelia: favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, Dark Lady of Shakespeare's sonnets and a collaborator on the plays who, in addition, became the first woman to publish a book of poetry in the English language. Was she the only outstanding woman of Jewish heritage of her era? Even that assumption is now under revision. Who were the others? Find out on October 24 at TRS!
