Help Support Gesher
Greetings!

Time Magazine has welcomed the new school year with an issue entitled, "What Makes a School Great."  The answer is provided in the subtitle: "It all starts with the teachers...."  We have many failed schools in this county, especially in low income neighborhoods, but even with those challenges, according to the article, there are schools which are succeeding by: tracking student achievement, providing better teachers, devoting more time to instruction, and aspiring to higher standards.

At Gesher these measures would be a familiar mix.  During Inservice Week before our teachers meet their new students they examine their work from the previous year and their testing results to gain insight into each child's academic strengths and weaknesses, obstacles and motivations.  Every faculty member is zealous about time-on-task because he or she knows that every teaching minute is precious.  The teachers hold high expectations for the students because this is the norm here- and the students routinely respond by lifting themselves to the mark.

 ***

Just this week we welcomed a new child to our gan (kindergarten): Zoe E!  This brings our enrollment up to 174, a 5% increase over last year, which is a very positive trend for which we have worked hard and of which we are indeed proud.

We are still able to take additional students into our afterschool ABC care and we are looking to re-open our morning ABC care.  If you are interested in either program, there is more information on the website and contract forms to download and return.  In any case, please contact us as soon as possible, so that we can serve you better.

Yom Kippur is coming right up.  My best wishes for an easy and meaningful fast!

Immunization Reminder for 5th and 6th Graders:

All Gesher parents are reminded to obtain a DTap or Tdap booster immunization for their 11 and 12 year old children.  If you have not done so yet, please do so as soon as possible.  This booster is a required immunization and should be administered by the time the child enters the 6th grade.  It is easily obtainable at your private pediatrician's office or at the local health department in the city or county where your children reside.

In addition to the required DTap or Tdap booster vaccination, the healh department  recommends that 11 and 12 year old girls receive the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) Vaccine.  This vaccination is now recommended but not required for all rising 6th grade girls.

If you should have any questions or would like to receive any additional information about either of these vaccinations, please feel free to contact Sharon Yungshten, the Gesher nurse, at telephone number

703-962-9206.

MAP is BACK!

MAP is Gesher's after school enrichment program.  It runs in three 8-week sessions on either Tuesdays or Thursdays.  The first session will begin right after the holidays on either October 5th or 7th.  The new brochure is out, and there are many wonderful classes to choose from.  There are classes for children who are artistic, or athletic, or academic.  In other words, there is something for everyone!  Anyone in ABC on Tuesday or Thursay can participate as part of the ABC program.

MAP is open to non-Gesher students as well.  If your child has any friends in the neighborhood, or from synagogue who would like to come for a MAP class, please pass along a brochure to them.  Fall 2010 MAP brochure

Hope to see many of your childen in MAP this year!

One more MAP opportunity

As if we didn't have enough MAP offerings, I have one more, but it won't compete with any of the other classes.  Hmmm, how is that possible?

For the budding Naturalists (and early risers) at Gesher, I am offering morning nature walks.  The class will meet on Tuesdays, from 7:30-8:30AM.  Each week we will walk through different habitats and watch as fall comes to our area.  We will look for animals, birds, bugs.  We will note as the colors of the leaves change.  Explore into the woods.  Play environmental games.  It should be great fun.  This class is open to all ages.  I will adapt the class depending on who is interested and what their interests are.  The cost remains $100 for the eight 1-hour sessions.  Dates are Oct 5-Nov 30, with no class on Nov 16.

Of course, don't forget to sign up for some of the other wonderful offerings.  We have 17 classes offered this session.  Surely there is something that is right for your child! Fall 2010 MAP brochure

Turn it Off!

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry reports that American children watch an average of three to fours hours of television daily.  Factor in Facebook time, TV and computer games, texting, twittering, and tweeting, and screen time grows exponentially.  It is estimated that by the time the average child starts middle school, he or she will have witnessed 8,000 murders and over 100,000 other acts of violence on TV.  By the time that child is 18 years old, he or she will have witnessed 200,000 acts of violence, including 40,000 murders!  A longitudinal study conducted over the course of 17 years concluded that teens who watched more than one hour of TV a day were almost four times as likely as other teens to commit aggressive acts in adulthood.  Another study found that more than half of children had TVs in their bedrooms - of those, 44% admitted they watched shows that were not approved by their parents when alone in their rooms.  The average American youth spends 900 hours in school, but over 1200 hours in front of the TV!  About two-thirds of American families eat dinner in front of the TV, in spite of research that convincingly shows a correlation between family time around the dinner table and improved academic prowess.  As a community, we need to be paying attention to this wealth of data.

Popular entertainment came under serious scrutiny after the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School when reports illuminated the Columbine killers' fondness for shooter video games.  Over a decade has passed and the only thing that is certain is that children are more exposed to violence in the electronic media than ever before.  Setting violence aside for a moment, a half hour in front of the TV delivers a smorgasbord of irreverence, profanity, and undiscriminating sexual behavior.  While electronic media is a fact of modern life, a screen-free week sends our children an important message - being together, playing games, taking walks, reading, and enjoying alternative activities is a healthy, fun alternative to vegetating in front of the tube.

Gesher joins schools nationwide for National Screen-Free Week from September 17-25.  If a whole week of being screen-free seems overwhelming, take smaller steps and commit to a screen-free day.  Go on, dust off the Monopoly board or another favorite game and reconnect.  You have everything to gain...

The Gesher Garden

Last year Gesher inaugurated our new garden.  We had a wonderful work party and built seven raised beds alongside the building, for classes to use for growing plants.  Most elementary grades took a bed for their class to plant in.  They coordinated the garden beds with different units of study.  The Gan grew vegetables to use during a study of nutrition.  Second grade grew bulbs and sweet herbs because they study Shabbat and Havdalah.  Third grade planted a "Three sisters" garden just like Native Americans would grow.  In Fourth grade they grew a "kitchen garden" similar to those grown in medieval and colonial times. And Fifth grade grew a slave garden because they were studying the Civil War.

Over the summer several "garden angels" came and helped maintain the beds. (Thank you to Morah Jackie, Morah Melanie, Ms. Wolin and parent Kecia Lansbury!)  This week all the grades went into the gardens to see what's growing.  We have several kinds of squash, some watermelons, carrots, kale, collards, peppermint and basil.  The students got to sample some foods.  Later this month we hope to cook some so the children can taste them, too.  For Sukkot we will play learning games in the garden as well.

At Gesher, we love going outside, and planting in the garden is a great way!  If you would like to volunteer and help in the garden, contact Jeanne Leckert at jleckert@gesher-jds.org.

Join our Sustainability Committee and Help The Environment

Gesher is already well-known for its green activities through our curriculum and our building operations.  The ethos of respecting the environment is a core part of our values as a school and,  we hope, helps us to set a leading example in the community and attract and retain students.

We recently gained external recognition with a $2,500 award from Nickelodeon's Big Green Help Grant Program.

To ensure we stay at the forefront, we are setting up a board committee to support the existing activities and help decide where we expand them; nature trails, energy usage, and recycling are just a few amongst the many different things we could do. We will spend our first few meetings identifying where we can have the most impact and putting a plan together and then we will move into implementation.

I will be chairing the committee,  working closely with our wonderful science teacher and green champion, Jeanne Leckert. If you would like to join us please email me at kevin@mossdomain.com.
