Happy Belated New Year! I always feel that half of January
is gone before we realize it's here. Too much champagne on New Years Eve,
perhaps?
So the big question is: are we going to say "Two-thousand
Ten" or "Twenty Ten"? I've talked to people on both sides of the fence. We're
used to Two-thousand Three, Two Thousand Eight, Two Thousand Nine, so it seems
reasonable to continue with Two-Thousand Ten. On the other hand, as has been
pointed out, Twenty Ten is one syllable shorter. All I know is that when I write
a check, I am saying in my mind "Two O, One O". So far I've gotten that part
right. I can't remember the correct number of the day we're on, and I keep
referring to dates in February as being in November. Go figure! Hopefully by
February I'll have it all straight!
In the store we've completed our inventory, and so are now
busy ordering, cleaning, re-organizing and re-arranging. You know, the typical
January pursuits. I am a Capricorn, and I can usually feel this drive to
re-organize, straighten and clean in my bones beginning in December. It is late
coming this year, and inventory seemed to go on forever! But now we're in full swing!
As a result of cleaning and re-organizing, we are having a Clothing Sale including
items from Texture, Basic Threads, Niche, Erin MacLeod, Maralyce Ferree and
Komarov. Come by and take advantage
of some deep markdowns, up to 75% on some items! Find a great buy!
Come in this month and vote for your preference on what to
call this New Year, New Decade. Or you can go to the Contact tab on the website
and send us an email. I will report the findings next month. That would be
February! All respondents will be entered into a drawing for Twenty Dollar and
Ten Dollar Gift Certificates. (Entry must be received by midnight, Jan. 31.)
.
We're excited to be able to offer Gift Certificates online now! They can be either in an electronic form to be used on the website, or a paper form that can be used either in the store or online. So you can give a gift to someone in another city to shop with us online, and they can give you a certificate to use in the store or online! How easy is that?
And don't forget our other services - Gift Wrapping, Lay-Away and our Wish Cards. The Wish Cards work like this - you choose an item or two you would love to receive, we write down all the particulars on the card, and you give it to that special someone who will be so happy to know exactly what you want! It works like a charm!

Winter Days
|
|
I am a Winter baby, and maybe that is why I really feel in
my element in the cold. My favorite days are those clear, cold, dry days
typified by bright blue skies and air that takes your breath away when you step
outside. I don't mind the hat and gloves that need to be put on inside before
venturing out, or the layers of sweater and scarf and coat. It is a treat for
me to be able to wear my wool clothing, and tights and boots.
Unfortunately,
those days in Seattle are few. Most winter days are typified by rain of various
intensities, from a fine mist to pelting rain that hits the pavement with such
force it seems to bounce right back up into the air. And there are those days
where the grayness seems palpable, as though you could reach out and grab it,
and you want to wave your hands in front of your face in an effort to clear it
away so you can see.
Those days I call "cozy days". They bring out my desires
for soup and comfort food and projects and candles. These are the days you want
to make your home inviting and warm and cocoon-like. Without the temptation to
work in the yard, or be out in the sun (what sun?) these days are great for
plowing through those projects you've put off, like organizing closets and
drawers, or sewing, or getting caught up on filing (does anyone ever get caught
up on filing?). Toward the end of the day I love to light a variety of candles,
and turn on my Harmony Lantern, make a good cup of coffee or pour a glass of
wine and enjoy a minute with a book I might be reading, great music in the
background.
I don't do this as often as I would like to - life interferes - but
there's nothing like it on a winter day. I highly recommend it!

Enjoy the quietness the Winter brings. the coziness of the dark days warmed by candlelight and a good cup of coffee or tea.

Mash banana. Lightly toast bread, and then spread one side with peanut butter, the other with banana. Put spread sides together. Spread one side of sandwich with butter, and place face down in a skillet heated to medium. Spread the up side of sandwich with butter, and when the first side is golden, flip over and fry the other side. Remove to a plate, cut carefully on the diagonal and enjoy!
