Scouts from Troop 19 help give Pitiful Fire Pits a New Makeover for Wildfire Awareness Week

Last month, Troop 19 from Thunderbird District and other volunteers helped to prepare campfire pits in seven Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) campgrounds for summer recreation season.

DNR's campfire pits have become somewhat overgrown and run down due to budget constraints. But, thanks to the volunteers, the pits are in better shape. And just in time to celebrate Wildfire Awareness Week, which was May 6-12. Wildfire Awareness Week events focus on teaching people about the dangers that wildfires pose to people, property, and the environment. It also is about teaching people the proper way to extinguish a campfire. Learn more...

New research show a great popcorn kernel can make a great popcorn Sale!

What makes a great popcorn sale for any unit?

Is it the boys? Is it the incentives? Is it the parents? While these are all important factors in a successful popcorn campaign; studies and surveys have shown there is a direct correlation of success to units who have an organized and passionate volunteer to lead the effort.

Anecdotal evidence tells us Packs, Troops and Crews who select the best volunteer to lead the popcorn sale reach and exceed their goal.

Plan your perfect year of scouting

Imagine one of your Scouts at recess on the first day of school telling his buddies what he did this summer. As the Scout lists off all the fun things he did, he will have his friends asking how they can get in on the fun. It's called peer to peer recruitment and it has proven to be the best way to introduce more youth to Scouting.

What is more important? The funds to have a quality program or getting boys in the program? The answer of course is both! While not all fun activities cost money, it sure helps provide a quality program. A quality program is a magnet for new youth.
