Volunteer Recognition Banquet
Saturday, March 10, 2012
Silver Beav

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 10, 2012 for the council's annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet. The banquet is being held at the Dwight D Eisenhower building at the People to People Complex (near the Spokane Airport) at 2011 S Flint Road in Spokane Washington. The evening will be a celebration of the many accomplishments of the volunteers of the Inland Northwest Council. The highlight of the evening will be the awarding of the recipients of the 2011 Silver Beaver Award. As a movement whose leadership is overwhelmingly volunteer, the Boy Scouts of America recognizes the need to acknowledge the invaluable services that men and women render to youth in and out of Scouting. The Silver Beaver Award, presented annually upon the action of a Council Executive Board, is the highest award that a council can present to a volunteer.

2012 is the Centennial of the Eagle Scout

Know a Scout seeking a little extra motivation to finish his Eagle requirements next year? We've got it. To celebrate the centennial of Scouting's top honor, all recipients of the Eagle Scout Award in the year 2012 will be eligible to wear a special version of the red, white, and blue badge, seen here. This year will mark 100 years since Arthur Rose Eldred became the BSA's first Eagle. Since that date - Aug. 21, 1912 - more than 2 million outstanding young men have earned the award. The special-edition patch, available at local Scout Shops after the first of the year, will help make an already-special honor even more noteworthy.

Gold, Silver or Bronze?
Journey to Excellence

The first year on the Journey to Excellence is behind us and those units who achieved Gold, Silver or Bronze status are to be congratulated! What is behind this prestigious honor? It is more than just a form; it is a culmination of key things that effective units are doing all across the country. High performing units have a plan for leadership succession, trained leaders, a program planned out with a budget, which leads to solid retention, membership growth plus so much more.

Those units who have achieved this award can download this order form for their recognition items. The Inland Northwest Council will provide a ribbon based on the 2011 Journey to Excellence unit's performance. These ribbons will be available by the March roundtables.

Congratulations!  The units listed here earned Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in Journey to Excellence.

Welding Merit Badge Joins the BSA Merit Badge List in 2012
Want to spark some passion in your Scouts?

Tell them about Welding, the next new merit badge from the Boy Scouts of America.

When it debuts in the next month or two, it will become the BSA's 128th current merit badge, joining fellow newcomer Chess, which made its move onto the list during the summer. (See a complete list of merit badges here.)

Some merit badges are all about enjoying the outdoors - Whitewater, Camping, Backpacking. Those active subjects are an essential part of a boy's involvement in Scouting.

But those merit badges that focus on career exploration are just as important. I'm talking about subjects like Architecture, Graphic Arts, Home Repairs, and - my personal favorite - Journalism.

Welding fits right in with those.

Let's all cheer everyone's three favorite words: New merit badge!

Does Your Troop Need More Scouts?

          ..................Plan for Year Round Recruitment

three Scouts
Is your Boy Scout Troop waiting or hoping that the den of Webelos Scouts who came for a visit last month will join your Troop? If they don't come to your troop, will your program continue to be a magnet for new Scouts with monthly campouts, a committee of supportive parents coupled with a fun and dynamic program?

Don't base the future of your Troop to whatever Webelos Scouts decide to transition over. Take action by following this guide to Year Round Recruitment.

Keys to Successful Units
hand circle

A long tenured high performing Scouting Pack, Troop, Team or Crew has three key elements in common:

            1. The Right Leaders are in place
            2. An Annual Program Plan
            3. Trained Leaders

How is your unit doing on these three criteria? The National Boy Scouts of America has come out with a guide for successful pack, troop and crew annual program planning.
