MUUSJA Update
Minnesota Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Alliance

Aug 3, 2010

Greetings!

A quick update to let you know about a few timely items before MUUSJA gears up for the September start of the church year.

Did you know that we also frequently update events, post links to articles, and welcome feedback via Facebook?  'Like' our page to be connected.  Not into social networking?  You can view all the recent links on the Facebook 'feed box' on MUUSJA's home page without being a Facebook member!

And finally, a friendly non-partisan reminder to vote next Tuesday!  If you will be away from your precinct on Aug 10, absentee voting is easy and open through Aug 9.

EPA Listening Session

America's Great Outdoors Initiative
Wednesday, Aug. 4   *tomorrow*
4:00 - 7:30 pm
Ted Mann Concert Hall
U of M West Bank
2128 Fourth St. South, Minneapolis

Join senior representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Dept of the Interior, the U.S. Dept of Agriculture, the Council on Environmental Quality and the U.S. Dept of Defense for a public listening session and local discussion on conservation, recreation, and reconnecting people to the outdoors.

This is a great opportunity to interact with the EPA and the Administration to show support for regulating greenhouse gases. What good is a great outdoors if climate change is likely to wreak havoc on our ecosystems?  Session starts at 4 pm, but attend for whatever portion you are able.

The Climate Misinformation Campaign that Confused America
Wednesday, August 11
6:00 pm
Cowles Auditorium at the Humphrey Center
U of M West Bank
301 19th Avenue South, Minneapolis

Join Will Steger, Polar Explorer and Dr. Naomi Oreskes, author of Merchants of Doubt for this insightful look at shifting public opinion. A recent study from the Yale Project on Climate Change indicated 40% of Americans believe there is major scientific disagreement as to whether global warming is real, yet the vast majority of climate scientists fully believe in the phenomenon.
Oreskes, a science historian, explains what - or who - is to blame for this misinformation conundrum. The event is free and open to the public.

Guests who would like to meet Dr. Oreskes are welcome to purchase a ticket to a reception hosted by the Will Steger Foundation, which will be held immediately prior to the discussion.

Thank you!
Standing on Side Love at GAMUUSJA had a fantastic General Assembly.  We hope you did too!  Many, many thanks to all the volunteers who contributed to our three workshops, our Friday dinner event co-hosted with UU Ministry for Earth, and the amazing Standing on the Side of Love public witness on Saturday, and Pride Parade on Sunday.

We Minnesotan's showed our UU friends from around the country what a great place this is, and how active we are in social justice and the work of our UU faith.  Your amazing and ongoing financial support of MUUSJA helps make this all possible!

Watch for an upcoming issue of our regular e-news The Connection for plenty of UU justice news, calendar items, and links.
