Urgent Climate Action Needed!
MUUSJA - MN UU Social Justice Alliance
May 13, 2009
Greetings!

Please take action NOW to help move federal climate change legislation!  It's easy: the UUA Social Justice program has a quick web-based form to send a specific, targeted message to your Representative based on their committee assignment and current climate change position.

In the past 30 days only two people with Minnesota return addresses have taken this UUA sponsored action, we're told.  Let's get those numbers up, now, so that our eight Representatives in D.C. know we UUs support taking steps now to address the threats of climate change.

Thank you,
Ralph Wyman
MUUSJA Director/Organizer

Tell Congress that UUs want Climate Change legislation this year!
Lighten Your CO2 Load
Representatives Waxman and Markey are introducing the "American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009." While not perfect, this comprehensive bill would create millions of jobs, increase energy efficiency, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, restrict greenhouse gas emissions that cause global climate change, and could eventually lead our country to an economy that is both more green and more equitable.

UUA Social Justice staff have determined that the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 is the best climate change legislation introduced to date. Now is our best change to enact climate change legislation that is both effective and just. President Obama has indicated that he wants to be able to sign climate change legislation into law this year.

Urge your representative to support the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.

Have time for a second action?
The E.P.A. is also working on Climate Change.  They have proposed a finding that green house gasses pose a threat to public health and welfare.

MUUSJA is joining with other UU State Advocacy Networks in preparing brief testimony for a May 18th hearing in the D.C. area, to be presented by the UU Legislative Ministry of Maryland.

You can support the work of MUUSJA by sending a simple email in support of this E.P.A. finding.

Here are more details about the proposed finding and how to contact the E.P.A. (pdf, 39kb). You may simply e-mail your comments to the E.P.A.  Be sure to reference Docket ID No. EPA-HQ-OAR-2009-0171.

For a non-specialist, an appropriate message is to say something like:
The ruling is clearly correct on the merits, and that you've heard some concern that EPA regulation isn't necessarily the best way to handle this issue. You hope Congress will pass a comprehensive energy plan that includes a carbon cap system, but this may be delayed, so until that happens the EPA needs to do what it can to slow and reverse increases in greenhouse gasses.

Thank you for responding to the urgency of climate change.  If you only have time for one action, please take action #1 above.  Its quick, easy and when combined with UU voices from across America, it will have an impact!
