The Connection: Events, Announcements and News
April 17, 2009
Greetings!

As Catie Chi Olson said to me the other day, April is a vortex of UU justice actions!  We had great UU turnout at the first ever Multi-Faith PP MultiFaith Serviceservice for Good Friday at Planned Parenthood in St. Paul.  Thank you to all who attended and to Kelli Clement who joined with other faith leaders to plan and lead this service.

Continuing the annual celebration of being able to once again take action outdoors in springtime, MUUSJA invites everyone to TWO actions this coming week:  the HIRE rally on Monday afternoon and the annual LGBT Lobby Day on Thursday.  Details are right below!

We have also received a specific request for help from the UUA Washington Office for Advocacy to take prompt action in support of the recently introduced Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.  There is a link which will send letters to your representatives, and EcoMinds will look for more substantive ways we can help move this legislation.

As always, there are lots of other activities in the weeks ahead.  Take a look, we hope to see you soon at one or more event.

I also want to take just a moment to personally thank and acknowledge Jo Haberman, our immediate past chair of MUUSJA.  Jo has put tremendous energy, passion and experience into the work of organizing UUs in Minnesota, starting before MUUSJA was even the Metro UU Social Justice Alliance!

Many, many thanks to Jo, and for planning an orderly leadership change.  Jo will remain on the MUUSJA board as we welcome our new chair, Kathleen Hollinger.  Please join me in both thanking Jo and in congratulating our new chair!

In faith,
Ralph Wyman

New US Climate Change Bill
Sprng Meeting and Annual Report
Quick Links
UUA supports Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009,
Urges UU contacts to legislators:
Lighten Your CO2 Load
On March 31st, Representatives Markey and Waxman introduced the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.  While it is not perfect, it is the most comprehensive climate change bill to date, attempting to integrate emissions reductions with energy efficiency standards, the development of alternative energy sources, and the creation of green jobs.

There are a couple of reasons why now is the time to push and push hard for climate change legislation.
1) Rep. Waxman is chair of the House committee on Energy and Commerce and thus it is more likely for this bill to make it out of committee and to a floor vote.  He and Rep. Markey have been staunch and smart champions on the issue, and they are doing a full-court press with this bill.
2) Next year will be mid-term elections, which will make some representatives more "conservative" when it comes to passing such legislation.  So the UUA Washington Office is  pushing hard for this bill and asking our allies to help, including you all.

We sincerely hope that MUUSJA and the other UU State Networks can bring their resources to bear in getting this bill out of committee in the strongest form possible and then approved by the entire House.

There is an online action via the UUA.  Click now!

And of course, as you all know, your voices are much more effective in written letters, phone calls and lobby visits.

Find your legislator here to call, write, or request an appointment.
