The mums have arrived! The first early mums have been brought into retail from our growing field this past Friday. They are strong beautiful compact plants loaded with buds.
I hope your gardens are hanging in through this drought! We have had many people in with brown leaves off their trees, shrubs or perennials. It is almost ALWAYS a lack of water. We cannot remind gardeners enough that deep long watering is the only way to keep plants surviving through this heat. Many plants will not survive next year if they go into the winter stressed and dried out. Sprinklers are your best friend through this dry weather.

FERTILIZE
Are your hanging baskets, planters or annuals starting to look tired? They probably need fertilizer. Fertilizing weekly at this time of the summer is optimum for lush flowering plants. Use a well balanced 20-20-20 fertilizer with micronutrients. What are micronutrients? They are the smaller percentages of copper, boron, magnesium, iron and zinc that help build a complete food for your plants. Read your label to ensure that your fertilizer has micronutrients in it. Good fertilizers will always have micronutrients listed in their analysis. If your petunias or trailers are starting to look stringy then don't hesitate to give them a good haircut. Pruning annuals back help them stay bushy and continue flowering. Enjoy! |
